Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

My first Liberty was a company car that I picked. When the company took back their car, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted another Liberty. It is fun to drive and is just the right size for city traffic. This is my third Jeep and I love my Liberty.

  • Jeep Liberty 2003 - satisfaction - 2003 Jeep Liberty

I have driven vehicles on business prior to my purchase of my Liberty. Comparisons were done between Xterra, Escape, and the Liberty for ride and enjoyment. The Jeep Liberty won hands down ... and was cheaper to boot. If youre looking for an economical call from a fuel perspective, this is not your car.

I love my Jeep Liberty Limited Edition. However, it drinks gas faster than I can drink water. If it was not for the high prices of gas and the amount that is used by the Jeep Liberty, this would be the perfect vehicle!

The steering is very hard and am not crazy about the tire on the back. The heat controls take a while before going to the selected temperature. Not the best gas mileage either. I paid for built in blou tooth and when I received the vehicle it was installed and not built in. I am still very disappointed with that. Im not sure that this vehicle is a good value for the money I paid. Ive had it since Sept 2007 and All in all to date its an ok vehicle.

I have never owned a Jeep. I love mine. The preformance of this vehicle is fantastic. The best handling and turning radius I have ever experienced in a vehicle. The 4x4 is great. I had never used a 4x4 until this winter and my Liberty put the BIG BOYS to shame. I could go through anything, and the others could not get the traction that the liberty gave me. I work at UPS and several of the Drivers wanted to test drive mine. Now 7 (seven) of us are happy Jeep Liberty Owners. All of us agree it has great preformance, style and is very unique. I will never turn back to the other brands. Great Product Colleen Ewald

  • Cheap PLastic Parts/Beware of RECALLS - 2004 Jeep Liberty
    By -

Truck Vents,Plastic body parts/mud flaps fall apart.Beware of NOT getting Recall notices promptly! Ball Joint recall found by Chrysler in 12/03, My Ball Joints failed unexpectedly in 2/04.They never sent recall notice until mid Feb. The company takes their sweet time contacting you, very uncooperative with the assistance I needed. This was a serious issue that was not approached immediately by this company and they say "You had Bad Luck"?? I say I had good luck cuz this could have cost me much more than $$ it could have cost my life when it fell to the ground while driving, without warning.

  • Liberty is a great upgrade vs Cherokee - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I traded my 00 Cherokee Sport in for a 02 Liberty Limited Edition. It is much more comfortable all around and the rear seat 60/40 fold down function is great. There is less room behind the back seat, but the spare tire on the tailgate frees up some of the lost space. The Liberty is a little bit slower off the line that the Cherokee, but the engine is smooth and adequately powerful, not to mention much quieter. The on-road ride of the Liberty is great and the interior fit- and-finish is better than anything in its class. The range of the Liberty is less than the Cherokee as the tank is smaller (18.5 gal vs 20 gal) and the mileage seems a bit poorer.

Good-looking truck and easy to drive. Lousy gas mileage and not comfortable for a six-foot male. However, my 16 year-old enjoys driving it around town. Fun to drive.

  • Cherokee worthy, love the new look - 2008 Jeep Liberty

Although we just drove it home last week, we have been able to take it out and test it in true Colorado fashion. The jeep name holds true with the 08 Liberty... Very impressed with how quite the ride is on the interstate as well. Going to enjoy this jeep for years to come...
