Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

  • Its ok, but not great. - 2005 Jeep Liberty

It doesnt get the mileage promised, and I dont like the shortened cargo space. The extra headroom is actually a bother. I have more trouble putting kayaks and bicycles on top of the car versus the old Cherokee. I like the design, not the height, and it performs well and dependably; just like a Jeep should.

I have had my Jeep Liberty Sport for a few months now and I really love it. Its fun to drive and excellent on gas. Great deal!

  • How many people have Trans Problems? - 2005 Jeep Liberty

I have an 05 Liberty Renegade. I have been having many problems and googling out of curiosity led me to this site. I had no idea my issues were so common. I so far have fixed both upper and lower arm joints(rear), ball joints, new brakes front and back (twice), rebuilt transmission, new AC cooling system, new trans hoses, new starter, new alternator, and have had continued lights going out esp. rear lights, my cds also get stuck and refuse to come out, and my belt makes a squeaking sound which is a constant annoyance..

I hate this car. Bad gas milage. Its very uncomfortable and it looks like a cheap car.

  • A good ride - 2003 Jeep Liberty

I just got my 03 Jeep Liberty Limited a week ago after ordering it around 10 weeks ago. I chose the Atlantic Blue exterior color, light/dark interior and added ABS and side-air bags too. The interior of the jeep is top-notch, the leather is fine grain and i love the overhead console and also the audio controls on the steering wheel. The sound system is decent and the seats are pretty comfortable too. Ride wise, its comfortable but the steering can sometimes feel heavy and it does not always take corners smoothly.

I know have 42000 miles on this vehicle and except for the replacement of the ERG sensor at 8000, I have had no problems with the Jeep. I have gotten as high as 31 mpg in the summer but in the winter time (Upstate NY) it typically gets around 21 mpg. Workmenship has been good but the original stock tires are garbage. I would not hesitate to buy this vehicle again.

While it has decent power, it gets HORRIBLE mpg. Not very spacious. Feels unstable in quick swerves to avoid traffic/animals. Not a true Jeep.

Our Liberty has been generally tackling all of our transportation/cargo needs for the past 6 months. Gas mileage (20mpg hw) is unfortunate, but a known trade-off for heavy duty suspension. The vehicle sufferes from a handful of rather obnoxious details, most outlined below. Three cheers to Chrysler for designing a nice hybrid of suburban and off-road SUV traits. Three bronx cheers to Chrysler for overlooking so many silly, correctable details, and then leaving them uncorrected in 2003.

Got my Liberty Sport 2wd. in June. Handles great. Of course like everyone says, sucks gas like it was going out of style.

  • First NEW vehicle - 2003 Jeep Liberty

I bought this Jeep 2 weeks ago. Its incredible. Ive driven trucks and other SUVs before but this is so much better. The ride is a bit rough but I expect that from a Jeep. Its built on a chassis designed for it unlike some other SUVs that are built on car chassis. I find the exhaust note to sound great, the steering is adaquate, the seats are supportive and comfortable and theres room for passengers and cargo.
