This Year's Model Updates:

An all-new diesel engine option makes its debut for the 2005 Jeep Liberty. Exterior appearance changes this year include a new front fascia, grille, foglamps, fender flares and body side moldings. Interior upgrades include relocated power window switches, new instrument panel cluster graphics and trim bezels and improved seat comfort. The Renegade model gets a flatter hood, taller grille, off-road foglamps and taillamp guards, as well as functional rock rails and four skid plates. A new six-speed manual transmission replaces last year's five-speed unit.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, economical diesel engine option, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Gas engines are rather thirsty at the pump, not as "carlike" on the street as most of its competitors, less cargo space than some of its competitors.

Great Engine! The only reason I bought a Jeep. Wouldnt have even considered one of the other gas hogs they make. Looking forward to more info on whether or not we can run 50% or 100% biodiesel in the CRD safely (and without voiding the warranty). Had to replace the EGR valve already. They should really do something about that! Had a few engine lights come on, but aside from the EGR, they were not serious. Best MPG was 27.5 on a trip from UP to Milwaukee.

This is an awesome vehicle on and off the highway. I have nothing but extreme positives for this vehicle except for the gas mileage which could be better; however, all of the other assets make this worth it to me.

I am very pleased with this vehicle so far. I did much searching before deciding on the Jeep Liberty and think the sporty look of this vehicle was a deciding factor in my purchase. Being a Jeep owner previously, I am pleased with the durability and performance of the Jeep brand.

This is the most classy, reliable fun car I have ever had. Its extremely maneuverable and has a nice ride for being a small SUV. Its got plenty of storage space in the back considering its a small vehicle. I have not had any problems in ANY type of weather and Ive pretty much encountered it all (rain, snow, ice, strong gusts of wind, hail).

Owned the vehicle for 4 years and with only 19,500 miles had to replace the brake rotors (and pads) twice. The last straw was the rusted-out transmission coolant line. Body bolts (under the top of the hood in the engine compartment) also rusted. Nostalgia aside, this car is the epitemy of the US car industry of the 50-60s. Poor fuel economy, handling, performance, body integrity, etc. When we purchased the car four years ago, we had to search hard to find one with the "optional" ABS package and side air bags. Doesnt everyone who wants four wheel drive also want four wheel (controlled) stopping too? Our 2005 Liberty was finally replaced with a 2010 MB GLK 350 4-matic...GOODBYE JEEP!!!

I am enjoying driving my Liberty for errands and long trips. All passengers are very comfortable. Its a real pleasure to go shopping. There is plenty of room for packages.

  • BUYER Beware! - 2005 Jeep Liberty

I have had nothing but problems with my 2005 Jeep Liberty Diesel. I have been a gentlemen with people who really DO NOT CARE about my poor experience. I have had so many problems that I cannot get into it. I would be very careful about buying one as I would NOT want another person to go through what I have had to endure.

The 2005 Liberty is very reliable, I have close to 12,500 miles on it, and drive approximately 550 miles a week. It has been very responsive in tight situations, braking is controlled and solid, handling is excellent and it turns nicely (great when towing, very maneuverable). Good visibility, gas mileage is poor when driving in town, but I have averaged close to 22 mpg on the highway with proper tire pressure & regular oil/air filter changes. Seats are a little firm but the extra support helps when your off road, interior panels scratch easily, cargo area needs a mat. Engine power is perfect great for passing & going uphill. Transmission could be smoother, 4x4 is right on the money. A great vehicle!

This vehicle must be a lemon; I really try to like it. Had egr valve replaced at 9000 miles as engine light had came on to stay; dealer had to order the part which took about a week to get. Engine still misses and just throws a fit every once in a while; took it to dealer to get it fixed and they said it was ok. Little do they know. ha ha ha

Traded in my 02 Nissan Xterra. I find the ride in the Jeep Liberty more comfortable not as truck like as the Xterra. One big factor in buying this was the 0% financing, which enabled me to purchase the Limited with all of the extras.
