This Year's Model Updates:

All 2004 Jeep Libertys now feature a passenger-side grab handle and a power accessory delay feature, while Renegade models get additional rock rail protection and black accent body side moldings. New options include UConnect, Chrysler's hands-free in-vehicle communication system, a tire-pressure monitoring system and a cargo organizer. Safety is enhanced thanks to a system that unlocks doors, illuminates interior courtesy lights and shuts off the fuel pump after airbag deployment. A new trim -- the Jeep Liberty Columbia Edition -- has been introduced, offering 16-inch graphite-painted aluminum wheels; graphite-painted fascias and body moldings; body-colored fender flares; a sun roof; fog lamps; and Columbia badging.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "carlike" on the street as most of its competitors.

Nice little car...Jeep seems to be a good value for the money. Been back because of some bad engineering...other than that no complaints.

  • This Jeep looks timid, but its not - 2004 Jeep Liberty

Just bought my 2004 Liberty and I can say I am not disappointed. My wife drives a Ford Expedition and the Liberty looks like it could fit in the back seat. However, the interior is bigger that I imagined. I am 65" and weigh 260 lbs and I have plenty of room and power with this new SUV as any of the others that I test drove.

Transmission always thumped shifting from 1st to 2nd. At 29,000 transmission failed and had to be replaced. Dealer support was great. At 30,000 the brakes are making noises. Transmission is starting to thump from 1st to 2nd again.

I bought my jeep a week ago and really like it! Its fun to drive...feels more like a car than an SUV. The ride is smooth and it handles well.

The only maintenance needed so far has been a brake job. It is a comfortalble ride for a tough little car.

I was pleasantly surprised by the 2004 Jeep Liberty. It displayed and soild firm ride quality, and great handling habits. The build Quality was also better than I expected. The truck(yes it is a real truck) was what my girlfriend wanted and I pushed against it... however after I drove it I was happyly surprised. I budged much more money for an SUV but this is a great truck for the money, and feels like many of the more expensive less capable trucks

  • Gas Mileage Stinks - 2004 Jeep Liberty

I find the transmission shifting from 1st to 2nd very hard. Then when coming to a stop it doesnt down shift back to 1st until about 4 seconds after I stop. The dealer claims its just learning my driving style & when it learns it ... this will stop??? I have owned V-8s that get better gas mileage. I find 14mpg in the city as being unacceptable from such a small 3.7L engine.

  • Great value - 2004 Jeep Liberty

This is my first Jeep and my first SUV. It has been a pleasure to drive. I have only had one item that needed to be repaired and it was covered under warranty. The Liberty is a great highway cruiser, safe and steady, plus it can go off roading or up to the mountains without any chains or struggle.

We bought this vehicle with 22k miles on it about 3 years ago. It now has 75k miles on it. We have had basically no problems with this vehicle, and the engine seems bulletproof, which is pleasantly surprising to me. The 4WD is incredible in the New England winters, and the 3.7L straight 6 is quite peppy (but loud). We have taken this on a few long road trips and its not too comfortable for extended periods of time. The seats are hard and offer no lumbar or lateral support, and also no adjustable head rest. The radio and HVAC controls are large, easy to use, and located right where you want them. MPG is tolerable if you are easy on the gas.
