This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2003 Jeep Liberty, a new overhead console, based on that of the Grand Cherokee, includes a unique interface that allows passengers to program the operation of nine convenience and safety items to their own preference. Liberty owners can now personalize several features, including which doors unlock with the first press of the remote keyless entry unlock button, the miles driven between service intervals and the amount of time the headlamps remain on when exiting the vehicle. Finally, an available six-disc in-dash CD player replaces the cargo area mounted unit. Standard four-wheel disc brakes endow the Jeep with improved brake feel on-road, decreased stopping distances and reduced brake fade. Available electrochromic interior and driver-side rearview mirrors help reduce headlight glare from traffic at night, and standard sliding sun visors have been added, which serve to keep the sun out of your eyes by providing added windshield and side glass coverage.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "carlike" as most of its competitors.

  • Repairs needed. Gas guzzler. Rides like a truck. - 2003 Jeep Liberty

I spent 1,500 dollars on repairs the first week I owned it. It cost me another 400 within the next week. I dont have much confidence in the reliability, since it left me stranded twice in the first month of ownership. It rides very much like a truck, and gets very poor gas mileage. Mine is 4WD, but did not come equipped with a towing package. It is the first 4WD I have owned with no provision for towing. It is very nice looking and the basic body style was the same for several years in a row. Mine could be mistaken for a much newer Liberty.

I test drove a Rav4, Honda CRV, Camry, Celica, Montero Sport, Wrangler and then saw the Jeep Liberty and thought cute but too big for me. Then I test drove it just to say I did. It was complete unexpected true love! Drove it home the next day. Been driving everywhere ever since. I used to panic at a snow forecast. Now I just smile.

I did not expect the quality to be as good as it was but as the dealer told me . . . Benz eng. is starting to show in Jeep and Chrysler.

  • Great ride, but horrible on gas - 2003 Jeep Liberty

The Jeep Liberty is a fantastic ride and very comforable. The fuel ecomony is poor on local roads even for an SUV. It does, however, improve greatly when on longer trips of 30 miles or more on the highway. I personally have a problem with the height of the panelling by the brakes. I have to position my right leg in such a manner as to not graze the panel. Thats a bit of hazard when having to brake suddenly. Drivers who are a smaller size may not have that problem. I happen to be 61. Those are my 2 major issues. I happen to enjoy my Jeep Liberty very much. The CD player and speakers are very good. The passenger seats are comfortable.

I just bought this car in Jan. 2011, and I have owned it for 6 months now, I have already put in $800 for repairing. It has 204,000 miles on it but it was 95% highway miles. I guess this is why people leaning toward for foreign vehicles.

I have owned this vehicle for one year this month. I have not had a single problem: it is built like a vault. Liberty is a home run. A real billy goat with onroad manners and unique sculpting in keeping with the Jeep brand. Under $30K for a loaded brawny, capable, stylish and refined Jeep. I will keep mine for a long time!

  • Great SUV, but... - 2003 Jeep Liberty

We intended to buy an older 4runner, but found that for the same money, could get the Liberty. Had 4K on it when we bought it. Loved it. It is a hoot to buzz around town and short trips. Not a long trip vehicle. It was set up as tow car when we bought it...it would be superb for that purpose. Has tow package, and tows our boat easily. Seats, even for for a short person like me, are a little short, but leather is broken in now, so more comfy. Kids in back seat can see out, a plus. Wish we could keep it, but must sell, mainly because need better mileage.

  • Amazing in every way!! - 2003 Jeep Liberty

The build quality rivals that of Acura. The looks are better than the rest, plus I had it through 3 feet of water and not one drop leaked inside. I get 23 mpg on the highway at 70mph and really couldnt be happier. No wonder this was the number one seller last year.
