Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

  • Only in a Jeep! - 2005 Jeep Liberty

Love my Liberty Sport. We gets tons of snow here. This little powerhouse just plowed through it like a hot knife through butter. You could feel the 4WD dig in as the ice developed on the roads. This is my 1st experience with a Jeep - Im a believer now! Can hardly wait to take it to the mountains of British Columbia this summer and do some climbing.

  • Horrible Experience - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Was great til 3 yrs later, even though we keep up on all maintenance on it. It started as problems with the engine light on, then started running hard and blowing blue smoke out the exhaust. The smog place gave us a report back with over 10 codes that was causing it to fail! We brought it to several mechanics and all agreed the engine was bad. Luckily I got in inheritance and we were able to pay 8,000 to put a rebuilt engine and some other minor parts in otherwise wed have had to let it sit while we paid it off then junked it, and now the oil light still comes one even thought its not loosing oil pressure. Turns out its an electrical problem. My opinion, dont get a liberty. MPG also stinks.

  • Great but needs a bigger engine - 2004 Jeep Liberty

I really like my Jeep Renegade; its light bar, special roof top carrier, fender flares, and large wheels make it stand out from other SUVs. Its an excellent off-road vehicle and had been able to handle mud, snow, rain, high winds, and scorching heat with no complaints. The paint has not chippied or faded, the body is still tight with no rattles, fit and finish are really good and the interior has no visible signs of wear.

  • Jeep Liberty-awesome!! - 2003 Jeep Liberty

The 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport is definitely fun to drive and has great acceleration. While it exterior appears smaller than the Jeep Cherokee Sport, the Jeep Libertys interior is definitely more spacious (head/leg/shoulder room). Weve test drove a number of vehicles in this class, but the Jeep Liberty was hands down the best. Virtually everyday, we - receive compliments about the exterior design and how sharp the interior looks.

Ok, I just got my liberty. So, this is early to really give a honest review. But I have to say wow! Went from charger which are great to a jeep. I really like the comfort. The look and interior features. I am satisfied after looking at all makes and models. I have 2 people who are going to purchase one this year. Please look and drive, you wont believe your eyes. Yark automotive was very easy to work with and helpful. oh if you do run into problems jeep/dodge will fix whatever needs to be fixed for sure. If anything.

  • Jeep On Top - Daimler Underneath - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I own a black Liberty Sport 3.7l 4x4 version of the Jeep . Its got real decent power, but isnt going to keep up with,. say a Northstar v-8 Caddy. High range power; needs about 3.5 feet of snow to stop it. Heavy suv - 5600 lbs. Very capable off roading experiences in the mountains. **Perfect little suv if gas goes down.**

  • The SUV that sucks gas but keeps on goin - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

My 2002 Jeep Liberty is a great family vehicle - we can pull our camper or boat - a pig on gas but at 2200000 km it has given NO PROBLEMS - except a few recalls we never received because of resales - balljoint.... I know hear a loud "ping" sound when the Jeep idles after driving... anyone heard this before....

  • Nothing beats it! - 2002 Jeep Liberty
