Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

  • Poor quality falling apart not a family vehicle - 2011 Jeep Liberty

The side molding on the doors is falling off and is not covered under warranty. Have only had the vehicle for 45 days. I am told that the simple brushing on the side of the seal may make it come off. This vehicle has PLASTIC side runners on the doors measuring 3-4” wide, it is nearly impossible for an adult much less a child to step in & out of the vehicle without stepping on them. These too are coming off and are also not covered by the warranty. My son is 5 y/o 45 lb, I cant imagine if an adult will step on it, it will come right off!!!

  • Bouncy Vehicle - 2003 Jeep Liberty

Seem very bouncy and build like an older Wranger or CJ series with a non- removable hardtop...wouldnt recommend for comfort.

  • Great New Liberty - 2008 Jeep Liberty

I grew up with a Cherokee and wanted another Jeep for myself. We still have the Cherokee with almost 130,000 miles. This 08 Liberty is my first truck - a great 4WD, go anywhere vehicle. Already have over 3000 on it. Was great in the snow this past winter - looking forward to taking it out west this summer.

  • Scary to drive - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Good looking vehicle that makes me nervous to drive on paved roads. The brakes and suspension are not well tuned to street driving. No confidence whatsoever in maneuvering this truck in urban or freeway driving. Brakes take forever to slow it down, and in the event that you need to avoid an obstacle youre better off plowing into it rather than trying to turn. I drove a Cherokee previously, and the big difference seems to be the added weight of the Liberty. The weak 3.7 V6 moves this boat slower than a 10 year old Civic. Not recommended for people that enjoy driving. Look for a used RX300 instead.

  • Fun Red Gas Swine ... - 2005 Jeep Liberty
    By -

This is by far the most fun vehicle Ive ever owned! Quite civilized in traffic, holds its own on the road ... quiet enough, great visibility, seats are really comfortable. Love the new red color, too. Now that I know where all the buttons are located, Im in control. And the 4-wheel drive: I go looking for things to run over JUST BECAUSE I CAN! The only gripe (and this is a real complaint @ $50.00 a tankful) is gas mileage. Its a pig!

  • ChiliRific Jeep!! - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

We bought this truck for ICS chili cookoff trips. I added a Wilderness rack by Garvin, (Rocky Road Outfitters) to add more room. I love the on road (55100 miles) and the off road capabilities of this truck. The full- frame/unibody construction makes it tight and strong, yet it can flex better than ANY SUV in its class. The future of my Liberty is bright. There will be an ARB bull bar bumper and winch added for sure. Maybe a Rocky Road OTT 2.5" suspension Lift and some real tires (see below). Anyway, we will be keeping this Jeep for many many years! BTW... I get 20mpg fully loaded, with a Wilderness rack on the roof, when I am on the highway.

  • 2004 Jeep Libery is great. - 2004 Jeep Liberty

Ive heard that this Jeep is thirsty at the pump. My new Jeep is getting 19.8 mpg driving in the city. Maybe that is bad, but it is good to me. Someone else said when you close the back glass you leave finger prints on it. My back glass has a plastic piece on it to avoid that. Plenty of head room.

  • Fun to drive but...expensive to own... - 2006 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I have a blast driving my Jeep. But, the poor gas mileage (average of 15 - 16 city/highway), the window regulator failure (three times), 4 alignments and the three set of tires it has gone through in 73,000 miles, and now Im told the rear end needs to be rebuilt. All of this has made the decision to purchase a different type of vehicle very easy. We are a Jeep family, we own three others and have NEVER had these problems. Our 98 Cherokee with 220,000 miles gets better mileage than I do in mine. I certainly wont buy another Liberty.

  • Libertys Are A Great SUV - 2005 Jeep Liberty

My son, sister and myself purchased Libertys in 2004. We are all happy with the purchases.

  • Reliable and high mileage best car ever - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I bought my Liberty in 2007 and it has been the best car I have ever owned. When I bought the Jeep it had 100K on it but I was on a limited budget and purchased an extended warranty. I never even had to use the warranty. I have not had 1 problem with this car! I have put over 40k on my Jeep and it is still more reliable than any car Ive ever owned. I wouldnt be scared to drive this car anywhere I had to go on the spur of the moment. If youre nervous of how many miles a Liberty can get on it- I am at 143k and still going strong!!!
