Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

  • unfinished gem - 2006 Jeep Liberty

if only this suv wasnt thrown out on the assembly line...has great potential but seems unfinished. it has a lot of power but almost too much. i feel like Im going to tip over every time I turn. The interior isnt much to look at and the radio could be better. It has a lot of power but I wasnt impressed. It stinks on bumps but is great in the snow with the 4 wheel drive on. I would rather have the Escape which feels safer and is cheaper. The jeep is "trail rated" and yet when you look at websites most recommend not to use the Liberty when off roading. Also when I was driving it a little rough it started shaking and the engine light went on.

Love that Liberty! Not noisy like the Wrangler, not big and tippy like the Grand Cherokee, but rather its quick, nimble, agile, stable, and solid. As I read on Edmunds: if youre looking at the Freelander but want a "capable" vehicle, buy a liberty.

  • Enjoyable but not comfortable - 2005 Jeep Liberty

I bought this jeep because of the looks and the plethora of libertys on the road. Overall it is a good vehicle. I have the 6spd. tranny and this thing moves! It has to be the fastest suv i have driven. So far i have not had any major problems except the fabric on the seats is not resistant of stains. Even water stains the fabric! Also the seats themselves should provide much more comfort. I am a little disgusted by the common notion that this is a "chick truck". It handles offroad just as well as my previous cherokee and actually is more fun offroad. Some day im sure this notion will change just as it did with the "grocery getter" cherokee moniker.

  • rollover - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I have had problems with the Jeeps skidding on even slightly wet pavement; replacing the tires with the best all-weather Michelins did not help. The steering is very sensitive, which does not help. I did have a rollover with this car, and was able to walk away, but the Jeep was totaled.

Weve had this vehicle several weeks now and love it. Dont believe expert reviews - look at one and drive it yourself. I came very close to passing this vehicle up based on expert reviews, but Im glad I reconsidered and drove one. An excellent, solid, quiet well built vehicle

  • Fantastic! - 2005 Jeep Liberty

I have an 04 Grand Cherokee, so the Liberty is actually my wifes vehicle. The V6 provides a good amount of power, more than I expected. At first, I wasnt a fan of the Liberty. I thought it looked a little wimpy, but its grown on me. Could use a bigger glove box and map pockets. Im a big-time Jeep fanatic and let me tell you, the off-road ability of this is nothing short of amazing.

  • Looks great has a lot of problems. - 2006 Jeep Liberty

The car has issues. The windows always fail. It always has recalls and my key will not come out of the ignition. When my air condition is on it makes a horrible noise. I went to turn the other day and there was a loud bang then it stopped turning (serious safety hazard) now it keeps happening. The transmission is also making weird noises. I wish i would have never got it. My other jeep was great. The car looks nice but it is terrible. if i could afford to make the thousand in repairs i would but now there is no use to for down in this downwards spiral Chrysler calls a car.

Got this for the Sky slider roof (trading in a Miata because I needed more space). Now I have a "convertible SUV" with all the space and comfort I need. Even my 74 year old dad says that it rides beautifully! Highly recommend!

  • All exellent consumer reviews Why do the pros not like this vehicle - 2012 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I have a 2004 wrangler sport and just traded in a 2009 grand cherokee with a quadra trac 1. Living in maine I wanted a vehicle that was trail rated and could seat 5 and tow 5000lbs This liberty fit the order. My wife and I love it. I being older the crossovers do not appeal to me if I want a soft ride I would by a car. Great vehicle!

This car has made me feel more alive. I am only 36 and I cant get away from the car. You will love this car after you buy or lease it.
