Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

  • 50k miles and going strong - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I bought this car when they first came out despite being hesitant about buying a new model. I have had it for over 2 years, putting 50k miles on it already and it still looks like new, drives like new, and I LOVE IT! People complain about the fuel economy, but I drive in heavy city traffic commuting every day and still get over 18 mpg -- certainly not great mileage, but pretty good for an suv, small or otherwise. I can honestly say that there is not another suv out there I would take in its place, whether small, big, luxury or economical.

The best Jeep yet. I love it, it handles great on the road and in the snow. The Jeep could almost drive it self.

1500 miles, leaked out power steering fluid. ABS light has come on twice. ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) light has come on several times causing it to run lousy. Dealer service useless. "A light came on but its out now." Took a week to get it looked at and three days to tell me what I told them. Had to drive my $25,000.00 thumb to the dealer to pick it up. Dealer says the diesels dont have service intervals. Fun to drive when it works. Quirky.

I test drove the Liberty just for comparison and once I got in it and drove it down the street I fell in love with it! It handles like a luxury car. The fuel economy is not as bad as most SUVs. I get about 24 highway, 19 city. The only thing I dont like about it is trying to change the oil because the oil filter is behind my skid plates and it is tough to get to. My Liberty is completely loaded...not an option missing...I could not have done that in any other vehicle I was looking at for the price I paid. Not to mention this was the most solid and safe-feeling vehicle I have driven.

I have hadan exceptional experience with this vehicle. I had a Cherokee before and this Liberty handles better, rides better and is more comdortable. my only gripe is that it does not have as much cargo room as my old Cherokee.

If you are in the market for a compact SUV, Jeep Liberty can be the answer to all you need for 4 X 4. This car looks good from the outside, robust engine, roomy interior and can tow up to 5,000 Lbs. The best thing is that it is under $25,000 with all the rebates from Jeep. Forget Kia, Ford, GMC and go for the real thing: JEEP

I have owned over 30 vehicles in 35 years and this is the most "fun to drive" vehicle ever. It is quick, loads of torque, and is just a great vehicle. Pulls my trailer with ease.

This vehicle was bought AS-IS and I tell ya i thought it looked ok and everything seemed cool even on the test drive. Well I was fooled, in the three years i owned it i spend just as much TRYING to repair it as i spend on the vehicle itself. Problems included, speedo, windows not closing, stalling on low RPMs, and more. Well the motor blew and i couldnt be happier. Thats right, happier to move on to none Jeep/Chrysler product. I bought a Ford Explorer XLT today.
