Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

  • I love my Jeep but there are a few character flaws - 2008 Jeep Liberty

I actually built my Liberty up with a 3 inch lift kit, skid plates etc. and I believe it improved the exterior stance of the vehicle. Jeeps can get through anything (with the right tires, I highly recommend the BFGoodrich All Terrains) The interior is comfortable and there is A LOT of neat storage spaces, fold flat seats including the passenger seat. I have not had one mechanical problem. Very tight turning radius. What I dont like: I bought the skyslider and it is awesome for going to the beach etc, but it leaks water into my headliner which is now stained and starting to smell. Also this causes quite a bit of wind noise. I believe they fixed in 2009 a bit.

I bought this vehicle in January of this year, it wasnt my first choice but it was the right choice. I went back and forth of this vehicle because I do a lot of driving and the fuel economy wasnt great I have driven Subarus prior to my Jeep because they blend fuel economy with AWD safety, but a month after I bought the Jeep me and a few friends went up to the mountains on a ski trip for the weekend and got caught in a pretty bad blizzard with more then a foot of snow on the ground already cars were starting to pull to the side of the road or rather getting stuck on the way to the side of the road. My Jeep plowed through the snow with little effort. I am a Jeep owner for life now

  • Skyslide Help - 2008 Jeep Liberty

I bought this truck for long business travel and the awesome skyslide top. I love my Jeep. However, the wind noise is unbearable. It now "whistles" at 20mph. If your looking to buy wait for the next generation of the Skyslide roof. I love Jeep and would love to see this fixed soon.

  • Liberty Sport - 2005 Jeep Liberty

Bought Liberty for my wife. Has been great and fun to drive. She Loves it. V6 got good get up and go. Havent had to use 4x4 yet. Waiting for it to snow. :) We pull our boat without a problem. Has a noise from one of the back seats but other than that good SUV. Gas could be better but not gonna gripe.

  • Gas Mileage Stinks - 2004 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I find the transmission shifting from 1st to 2nd very hard. Then when coming to a stop it doesnt down shift back to 1st until about 4 seconds after I stop. The dealer claims its just learning my driving style & when it learns it ... this will stop??? I have owned V-8s that get better gas mileage. I find 14mpg in the city as being unacceptable from such a small 3.7L engine.

  • Its ok, but not great. - 2005 Jeep Liberty
    By -

It doesnt get the mileage promised, and I dont like the shortened cargo space. The extra headroom is actually a bother. I have more trouble putting kayaks and bicycles on top of the car versus the old Cherokee. I like the design, not the height, and it performs well and dependably; just like a Jeep should.

  • How many people have Trans Problems? - 2005 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I have an 05 Liberty Renegade. I have been having many problems and googling out of curiosity led me to this site. I had no idea my issues were so common. I so far have fixed both upper and lower arm joints(rear), ball joints, new brakes front and back (twice), rebuilt transmission, new AC cooling system, new trans hoses, new starter, new alternator, and have had continued lights going out esp. rear lights, my cds also get stuck and refuse to come out, and my belt makes a squeaking sound which is a constant annoyance..

  • A Nice drive. Liberty 2003 - 2003 Jeep Liberty

Got my Liberty Sport 2wd. in June. Handles great. Of course like everyone says, sucks gas like it was going out of style.

  • renegade - 2004 Jeep Liberty

good car overall...very fun to drive

  • Mixed Emotions - 2007 Jeep Liberty
    By -

Mechanically, I havent had one issue with the vehicle. The vehicle has never left me stranded and it has always sent me from Point A to Point B. I have never had a problem with the windows like many here mentioned and I have never had a problem with the electronics of the vehicle. My biggest issue is with the interior. Not only do the seats get uncomfortable after a while, but anything can stain the seats! And I mean ANYTHING! Pour water on them, and you have a nasty dark mark all over it. The gas mileage is also terrible on this vehicle. If I knew I was going to get such terrible gas mileage, I wouldve gotten a Grand Cherokee. Never getting a Liberty.
