Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

This is the must fun-to-ride vehicle I ever had, either on the sand or mud and of course on-road its behavior is incredible. I use to go off-road every weekend, and its a shame (for the other owners) but I had been paid for towing expensive Cadillacs, fords and others "4X4" SUVs.

Ok ... I love(d) my Liberty. I think its decent looking, nice size, nice capabilities, practical for what I want in a vehicle. But lets be honest here... I only got it because it was a cheaper alternative to a Nissan Xterra. I was very happy with it, however, till about 10 months and 22,000 miles into owning it. I have had it in the shop 5 times since then and it still hasnt been fixed. Its turning into a nightmare and I am about to look into the Lemon Law. First it was blowing spark plugs, then it was going through fuel injectors, and now it needs a new head gasket ... with 31,000 miles. What kind of quality is that? And the dealership is giving me the runaround. Thanks Chrysler!

Love my new Jeep. It handles great and gets great gas mileage. Better than my Dodge rams 10 mpg. Averaging around 25 mpg. I had heard it was slow on the passing mode but I dont have any problems with it. Head room is great and I have plenty of leg room for a 6,5" teenager in the back seat. Love that the back seats recline. Great looks everyone loves the new liberty style. Tint on the back Windows is nice and dark and the flip storage tray is nice also have the cargo cover in the back to hide stuff in the back. Great at Christmas to hide gifts from prying eyes when shopping. Engine has plenty of get-up and go for a v-6 even though Im used to a v-8. Radio system and cd player have a good sound

So, I have had this Jeep for 4 months now. Runs okay, no major defects. However, I am getting 13.3 MPG. My low fuel light or chime does not work. Loses power and does not shift correctly when putting strain on Jeep , like going uphill. Took it to dealer, and they naturally found no problem. The dealer told me as far as the low fuel light not coming on, "You have a fuel guage dont you?" I told him yes, and he said that I must have more reserve fuel than what I thought. So I went to fuel up. I put 18.5 gallons in. That chime and low fuel light should have worked. In my opinion, there are better SUVs out there. MPG on sticker is no where near the actual MPG that you get.

I really love my Jeep and so does my 3 year old son, her name is Libby. We have driven a lot of highway miles and even though the gas mileage is only about 17 mpg, its a fun trip and we dont want to get out.

I recently got this Jeep and I cant tell you how much fun I am having. First of all it is really sharp and commands attention. It has plenty of power for such a heavy SUV. It rides very smooth, and it does run very quiet! Everything is within easy reach, and easy to use. I am really enjoying having a sunroof-some people asked me if it was a new Hummer. I tell them the Hummers have copied and mine is all Jeep! Good job Jeep

  • Very Happy with it, love the Sky Slider - 2008 Jeep Liberty

Its a Jeep, so fuel economy is not going to be good by any means. But the performance and capabilities make up for it. We bought a Sport model with the Sky Slider which performs flawlessly. We love it and couldnt be happier with our decision to trade in an 06 V6 Commander for this one. Some reviews claim that it lacks a bit of power. Maybe it does, but to me its got plenty of juice. Think about it, it is the same engine they put on the V6 commander but having to handle over 1200 lbs less. In my opinion the engine moves it pretty good. It takes time to get used to the 4 speed tranny instead of 5 on the commander so you will have to press the pedal deeper on hwy driving to pass. Very happy.

    Great car!! Fun to drive

Be careful when considering the Liberty. The off road suspension design shakes you like crazy on even the smallest bumps. The seats are as stiff as concrete and the shape numbs my lower back and legs. The full economy is aweful. 18 mpg is the best I can do.

  • Best vehicle Ive owned! - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

We have had this Liberty for over 8 years. Its reliable, would drive it anywhere! For 8 years weve put new tires on, brakes, oil changes and thats it! It has not needed anything but normal maintenance nothing!! Its so easy to drive and park being small and theres only one thing I wish was different and thats the MPG, which can be helped some by driving sensibly.
