Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

  • I love my jeep - 2004 Jeep Liberty

I have always wanted a Jeep. I test drove this vehicle and fell in love with it. It handles nicely on the road. I like the idea of the Window conrols in the middle. That way the little ones cant "Play" with them, even with the winow locks on. The leg room is great and also has exceptional head room. I was able to get a fully loaded Jeep Cheaper than the others on the market.

I love my Jeep Liberty although it sucks gas at a time when gas is outrageous. I wish it had a left foot rest and that the power windows were on the door but I love the comfort and maneuverability of the Liberty.

  • Nice, but could be better - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I like Liberty, but I had a lot problems with it in the beginning. Recalls were becoming common. I am concerned about some of the electrical features. My in-dash CD player malfunctions frequently. To be fair, most of the problems I had were escalated by the service I received, not the vehicle. The Liberty has great visibility & handles well. It has just enough power. Controls & functions are easily accessible. But, the gas - WHEW - you have to have a second job just to keep the tank filled. In addition, the miles add up extremely quick - there is no way I have driven as far as the car indicates.

  • Saved my life - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I cant say enough about my satisfaction with my Jeep Liberty Sport. Five days ago I was hit head- on by another driver who veered into my lane. The Jeep held up really well. I came out of the experience with bumps, bruises and sore muscles. The CHP told me the Jeep saved my life. I loved my Jeep and Im buying a new one just as soon as I can.

  • 08 Liberty Limited - Great Vehicle - 2008 Jeep Liberty

Driven pickups and 4x4 vehicles for many years, though last three were spent in a sports car. Needed a vehicle that we could tow "4-down" behind a motor home and still be a daily driver, with room for people and cargo. The Liberty fit the bill. It drives and rides nice is very quiet even though I have the Sky-Slider. It is roomy enough without being giant. Short turning radius, quick selection into 4wd, all make this a pleasure to drive.

  • Towed 3 times in 6 months! - 2010 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I have the 2010 Jeep Liberty Sport with the full slider window. Its a gorgeous vehicle however I have had to have it towed 3 times in 6 months for various things involving the "on board computer". I now dont want to drive it anywhere for fear it wont start! Each time the dealer has told me that what goes wrong "cant be fixed in the field" so it had to be towed. Im ready to turn it in! :(

This is my second Jeep. All the things I liked about my old Jeep only got better. This is a fun vehicle, handles great ,responsive engine and decent mileage for a real suv.

  • I wish it were bigger - 2005 Jeep Liberty

The reason I bought my Liberty CRD was for fuel economy and towing. So far the best mileage Ive had was 26 on the highway on I40 through the Appalachians in NC/TN. I wish there were more interior room, though. Theres a transmission hump right where I like to put my foot when Im using cruise control. Its also been in the shop a few times, luckily still under warranty. So far, the EGR valve, torque converter, ball joints, a a glow plug have been replaced. The ball joints and torque converter were recalls, though. I also have a problem when the fuse for the rear wiper blowing at random. I think I might trade it in for the Grand Cherokee CRD when it comes out.

  • Loved Jeeps until I needed a replacement part!!! - 2008 Jeep Liberty
    By -

Im on my second jeep. Loved jeep and referred people to buy jeeps...but last week my 2008 Jeep had issues and needed to be towed. I has been 7 days and the jeep is STILL at the garage and the part is STILL on a national backorder list with no expected date in site! The National Chrysler/Jeep 800# has been absolutely no help...no timeframe, no help getting a rental car, NOTHING! So, I guess the new motto with jeep is that as soon as you buy their product, the hell with you! You are on your own! So, I guess Im stuck making monthly payments on a vehicle that is sitting unusable at a garage! I am disgusted at the treatment I have been given by the Jeep Dealership/Jeep Garage and 800#.
