An all-new diesel engine option makes its debut for the 2005 Jeep Liberty. Exterior appearance changes this year include a new front fascia, grille, foglamps, fender flares and body side moldings. Interior upgrades include relocated power window switches, new instrument panel cluster graphics and trim bezels and improved seat comfort. The Renegade model gets a flatter hood, taller grille, off-road foglamps and taillamp guards, as well as functional rock rails and four skid plates. A new six-speed manual transmission replaces last year's five-speed unit.

• Gas engines are rather thirsty at the pump, not as "carlike" on the street as most of its competitors, less cargo space than some of its competitors.

  Not enough storage, seat not comfortable - 2005 Jeep Liberty

  My husband just brought this home for me last week. Because of the jump in gas prices over hurricane Katrina, he traded in my Suburban. This is a very fun, solid SUV. However, if you are looking for storage areas to put your stuff, forget it. The glove box isnt even big enough to hold my few maps, no sunglass holder and the seats are not very comfortable, so I am not sure how it will be on long drives. I think this car would be great for a 20ish year old for getting around town or a quick ski weekend, certainly not big enough for a family, and not comfortable enough for me, but until gas prices goes down, it will do, then it will be handed down to my two boys to fight over.

  This is a great SUV, the CRD gets an average of 24 in town and out and has gotten 28 on a trip.

  Bought to replace an Expedition. Its a more "gas friendly" replacement. Didnt enjoy the hassle of negotiation, but its a good vehicle for the money. Good towing capacity and performance. Only problem so far is installing towing package parts: the wiring is a major hassle, but there were no Libbys with towing package available in stock at local dealers when we bought ours.

  Special ordered this Jeep. I have been quite pleased with this car in spite of some quirkiness. Love the 2.8 L turbo diesel. It is a bit noisy but the torque is phenomenal. This little guy is no slouch on the road. Great fuel economy, 30 - 31 MPG (calculated) when kept under 65 MPH. Fairly good reliability. Torque converter is weak link in the drive train and I am on #3. Engine requires a bit more care than the gas version but it is an easy engine to maintain. Some aftermarket engine parts available (filters) but all else you have get at the dealer and they are not cheap. Adequate long distance road car but very good off road and in heavy snow.

  My Jeep Liberty 4x4 is the best thing I have ever bought. I love the idea that if I get stuck in traffic and I dont have time to wait I can just cut through the grassy/swampy median. I would say if you are not sure of what kind of vehicle you should go check out the Jeep Liberty. It is also not true about it being a gas hog, it is a V-6 not a 4-cylinder. So dont expect it to get gas mileage like a 4-cylinder. It out preforms any 4-cylinder you could ever drive. I think the Jeep Liberty is top in its Class!

  I was going from a MINI Cooper S to an SUV. This was not going to be an easy transition but I feel like I have upgraded in lots of ways. I like the color (Light Khaki) and the interior is functional and very comfortable. Will be used for the daily 30 mile commute and getting out of the snow 30 miles from civilization. Doesnt seem too gas hungry for a real 4WD.

  This is my second Liberty. The 2002 had the gas engine and averaged 18-19 on the highway at best. This diesel version approaches 30mpg at 58-65 mph. I love the tight turning radius which makes parking a breeze and the fact it is much more nimble than the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has proved very capable of pulling a heavy trailer and pushing through snow. We are very happy with it. The diesel is barely audible with the radio or CD player on and never smells like a Greyhound bus.

  This is my first Jeep. At 3500 miles theres been not one problem. Fit and finish of interior and exterior is great. Having been the owner of Honda and Nissan I expected less. Will be using it as a tow vehicle for a 2000 lb. 18ft pontoon boat as well as our daily driver. Wife loves it.
