Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

  • Great Vehicle - 2008 Jeep Liberty

I was really apprehensive about buying a Jeep but looking at the Liberty with its features and price I decided to take the chance. Bought the 08 Liberty Sport 4x4 slightly used (2700 miles) and couldnt be happier. It was great on the snow this winter. Drove it 1700 miles cross-country. Comfortable drive even at 80 mph plus. Drove it off road on some of Arizonas most challenging roads. It performed well in all instances. No comments on reliability yet (still only have 6700 miles on it). But so far so good.

  • Problems - But Still Happy - 2005 Jeep Liberty

Ive owned my Liberty Diesel for ~ 4 months and its needed service twice already. The engine died due to a wiring harness short on day 2 of ownership and it recently developed an intercooler (turbo component) leak requiring service. Nevertheless, Im still pleased. Mileage has been 25+ MPG on the highway, ~ 23 combined city/highway. Towing a 3000 pound boat is absolutely effortless. Im hoping all the bugs are worked out because this Jeep is a blast to drive!

I have had my Liberty Sport for about 2.5 years now and really like it. It is fun to drive and has a good deal of room.

Back in 1996 we had a new Grand Cherokee Limited. Had it for about three years. Traded it in for a truck until when the Libertys came out, we decided to order one. Man! did we ever miss the JEEP quality that goes into these vehicles. Since then, got rid of the truck and are extremely excited to go to our first Camp JEEP this year with our Liberty. Many people ask how we like the Liberty. The answer to that is, I just cant stop talking about it. We had purchased the 4WD Limited in Woodland Brown. We just love it.

  • Shifty Transmission 04 Liberty - 2004 Jeep Liberty
    By -

Transmission always thumped shifting from 1st to 2nd. At 29,000 transmission failed and had to be replaced. Dealer support was great. At 30,000 the brakes are making noises. Transmission is starting to thump from 1st to 2nd again.

I bought my jeep a week ago and really like it! Its fun to drive...feels more like a car than an SUV. The ride is smooth and it handles well.

  • Definately Rethinking... - 2006 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I am seriously rethinking purchasing this car. Within 50 of pulling out of the parking lot the check engine light came on. I made arrangements to turn it in the next day and before I could even get to the dealership I found two other flaws. The front passenger window was out of track (working but doesnt go up evenly leaving a crack at the top) and the drivers side rear outside door handle had separated from the door by about a quarter inch. Turns out it was the check engine light was for the catalytic converter. While the warranty covers the converter it does not include the door handle or the window. This is a used car that was a leaser with only two owners and 38000 miles when I bought it

The only maintenance needed so far has been a brake job. It is a comfortalble ride for a tough little car.

  • Fun but too small for my growing family! - 2005 Jeep Liberty
    By -

Ive had no issues with this Jeep. Just routine maintenance and oil changes. Its fun to drive and has good power. Im 65" and the sets are uncomfortable for me. When I ride shotgun, my knees hit the handle/dash area. My wife says the same thing and she is 57". We take long trips (8 hrs) and it drives great but is hvery uncomfortable. Were trading it in since well be having baby #2 soon. This was fine for 1 baby but not 2 kids. Too cramped and therell be no room left when traveling. Also dont spill liquids on the seats b/c the stains will not come out! Ive tried everything and all detail shops say this fabric is hard to clean.
