This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

  • Great vehicle - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I am very happy with my choice of SUVs in the Jeep Liberty. The only negative is that I dont feel as safe when highway driving. I keep thinking of the rollover safety rating (poor)!!

  • Review after 2 years (27k miles) - 2002 Jeep Liberty

First, this vehicle came with a poor choice of tires (Wrangler ST) so I upgraded after 18m miles to the larger, fatter Firestone Destination LE (yes Firestone) tires. For $350.00, it TOTALLY changed the way I feel about my Jeep. I love it. My family of just 3 went out to AZ with Seadoo in tow in June and the Liberty did just great up and down hills and through the desert from South Texas to Lake Havasu City (1200 miles each way). It carried all our luggage, lake gear, vhs, toolboxes, chests, etc. with no obstruction in back window and 60/40 back seat flipped down. Absent "slippery in rain" tire issue, this Jeep has given me zero problems. As for gas, its an SUV!!! Great towing capability!

  • Great for around town - 2002 Jeep Liberty

It is a fun vehicle to drive and small enough to squeeze into small places. The turning radius is fantastic. No secret that its poor on gas. Its perfect for what we bought it for which is errands around town, bring kids to/from school, grocery shopping, etc

  • slippery when wet - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

Our Jeep Liberty has been a fun and very reliable vehicle thus far. I agree with the other ratees, the 2002 Liberty did not come with the ABS. My wife complained about sliding on wet pavements, did not believe her until I went sliding thru intersection at only 20 mph. Now wife is afraid to drive in rain or snow.
