Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

The Jeep Liberty has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. It is reliable, good on gas, has the power I need when required, hold lots of stuff for moving. I traveled cross-country in it and never got backaches or headaches because of the way the seats are made.

  • They Cant Believe Its a Diesel - 2005 Jeep Liberty

I have to tell most people that this is a diesel engine. The performance and fuel economy are much better than the 3.7L V6. Sure, there are some quirks to owning a diesel, but it isnt as much of a hassle as most think. Besides, this is a quite torquey little SUV with a 5000# towing capacity. And the 5 speed automatic with OD lockout is a great pairing for the Italian-made 2.8L turbo diesel. Shifting into and out of 4WD is easy. Even if the only off-road your CRD sees is a mall parking lot, you wont be disappointed with the truck in the least.

We have owned a Liberty for 6 mos now and love it! Its fun and easy to get about anywhere you want to go. The only two things that I consider a drawback is gas mileage and no handle on the back flip up window. Of course it doesnt drive like a luxury car but remember its a JEEP!

We have 3 Libertys in our family. All have been very dependable and have only been back to the dealer for scheduled services. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone in the market for a real SUV.

For the young and adventures, yes. I find it to be a rough ride especially long drives, it uses alot of gas and I dont find it to be very comfortable.

A great looking car, with a solid ride and aggresive style. A great car for weekend drives and offroading.

I had a Chrysler Concorde for 3 years. I had wanted a bigger car, I was driving a 88 Sundance (can you tell my father worked for chrysler 38yrs in indy. I felt I needed something more family and professional. It was wonderful to drive, but it was just not me. It made me feel old and it was too big. So when the Liberty came out--it had my name written all over it! And the limited is the bomb. I have a gold package too! I get compliments daily. And I still have all the luxuries of the Concorde and it sporty like the Cheeoke or Darango. Ill keep this car at least 10yrs.

A great SUV for my wife. Its small size makes it easy for her to handle and extremly tight turns make it a sinch to park. Fun car!
