Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

  • Had to review this fun inexpensive little truck - 2005 Jeep Liberty

This is my 5th jeep went from a cj to a yj to 2 TJs but since I got 2 kids had to get a friendlier vehicle and low and behold the liberty. I always thought of these as chick vehicles but they are at the LOWEST end of the used SUVs and I bought a 2005 with 64Kms mint mint mint for 6500$ with 2 sets of tires from an old lady. Now 2 years later ill review it. This jelly bean can motor, good acceleration, decent offroad handling, moderate pulling power, and absoloutly DISGUSTING GAS MILEAGE! But meh who cares. My unit has been reliable and maintenance free for the past 2 years, easy to park and you can load it up pretty good with gear and 2 kids.

  • Good Car - 2002 Jeep Liberty

76000 miles on a 4 cylinder and its still doing well. Almost paid off, and no problems, except for a leaky windshield that the dealer tried to fix 4 times, but the leak is minor, and I gave up.

  • One Great Ride - 2003 Jeep Liberty

Ive had my Liberty for over a year now and I LOVE it. I have a little over 16,000 miles and have NOT had it back to the dealer. There are a couple of minor recall issues that I will get to once I need service. The truck is still solid, no rattles/squeeks and handles great in city traffic. The highway ride is pretty good for a truck and it handles bumps potholes like they dont exist.

The car runs well, but it feels bumpy and stiff. It drives very well in snow.

  • You can tow an Xterra, for one thing - 2010 Jeep Liberty
    By -

First things first - the Xterra is a certified piece of junk. In 2007 both me and a friend of mine bought off-road SUVs. He got an Xterra, I went for the Liberty. We have made two trips since then. I mean serious, serious off-road stuff. The Xterras never made it back on its own. The Liberty has been literally indestructible. Funny, but this spring it was stoled, while my friend sold the Xterra. Now I got a shiny new Liberty. They say the interior aint sexy. maybe, but what counts is its robust body, good mechanics. This one is the true SUV, true to its core.

  • Just missing a Bag of chips - 2004 Jeep Liberty

I hate the window controls, and the remote entry is a bit wierd. Other than that, I love the Jeep Liberty. Even if the gas mileage is way less than I was told at the dealership, it is still better than my last truck.

  • Renegade Fun! - 2005 Jeep Liberty

Ive had my Jeep for 5 months and I love it. Gas mileage stinks but it is a very reliable off-roading vehicle. I love the light bar on top. It turns the woods into daylight at night.

  • i love my jeep - 2003 Jeep Liberty

great vehicle. fun to drive. goes great in the snow. fun look to it and many people have stopped to ask about the jeep because they would like to purchase one. seats 4 people comfortably with a large trunk space.

  • WE LOVE OUR JEEP LIBERTY - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I HAVE NO REGRETS FOR PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE. I JUST LOVE TO RIDE IN IT. MY HUSBAND HAS A GRAND CHEROKEE & SINCE WE PURCHASSED THE LIBERTY IT SEEMS LIKE THAT IS ALL HE WANTS TO DRIVE! I HAVE 2 COMPLAINTS THE GAS MILAGE IS TERRIBLE, & I SEEM TO HAVE A WEIRD NOISE AS I REACH 50 MILES PER HOUR? EVEN HIS 8 CYLYNDER CHEROKEE HAS BETTER GAS MILAGE?

  • Headache - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I had wanted a liberty since last May. I bought one in October and it was great for about two months then my troubles began. Ive had to go to the dealership to have my front suspension replaced, but it seems that my rear suspension is bad too. My heating system has a tendency to smell like a skunk, and my brakes dont work well any more and I dont even have 6000 miles .Overall ride quality has just gotten worse. I was going to buy an Escape, but decided on the Liberty,I may have made a mistake.
