This Year's Model Updates:

All 2004 Jeep Libertys now feature a passenger-side grab handle and a power accessory delay feature, while Renegade models get additional rock rail protection and black accent body side moldings. New options include UConnect, Chrysler's hands-free in-vehicle communication system, a tire-pressure monitoring system and a cargo organizer. Safety is enhanced thanks to a system that unlocks doors, illuminates interior courtesy lights and shuts off the fuel pump after airbag deployment. A new trim -- the Jeep Liberty Columbia Edition -- has been introduced, offering 16-inch graphite-painted aluminum wheels; graphite-painted fascias and body moldings; body-colored fender flares; a sun roof; fog lamps; and Columbia badging.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "carlike" on the street as most of its competitors.

Changed to Jeep from LR Freelander for off road ability. Now used extensively offroad in Scotland French Alps. Tiring to drive round town due to weight and control effort required ( manual . Great long distance cruiser- lots of space and very civilised. Chassis build quality is fantastically vault like but surprisingly its unreliable with fan belt sawing thru badly positioned coolant pipe in first 1000 miles, frayed wire causing warning lights to come on and diesel leaking from injector. Superbly plush suspension offroad though surprisingly low ground clearance at sump means lots of noise when rock hopping though no damage to date.

Be careful when considering the Liberty. The off road suspension design shakes you like crazy on even the smallest bumps. The seats are as stiff as concrete and the shape numbs my lower back and legs. The full economy is aweful. 18 mpg is the best I can do.

Battery died before 1 year of ownership. Tends to pull to the right. Gas mileage is terrible I have to reach back to for window controls, due to being extremely short. Would rather have controls on dash or doors. I do like how it sits high, I can see out easily.

Seats tooooo small. Gas economy a joke. Sticker promises 17-21. You get only13-17. Air conditioners vents badly designed

1 year owner and 12,000 miles later. Everything works well with the exception of a transmission noise and a loud thump that comes from the rear when the automatic tranny shifts from 1st to 2nd. Dealer says the tranny noise is "normal" -- funny it was not "normal" when I purchased it.

  • Still Needs Work - 2004 Jeep Liberty

In total, not the worst SUV Ive owned, but still has room for improvement. Thirsty, lacking interior storage areas, and mediocre acceleration are common complaints that I agree with. Mechanically the Liberty is subject to bad ball joints, computer problems, rear hatch opening at random and bad ring and pinion whine. This last is my biggest gripe, as Jeep insists it is normal and acceptable for the Liberty to make a loud whining sound at 60-70 mph and refuses to try and fix it. Very irritating and sufficient to keep me from ever buying another Jeep.

with about 300 miles on vehicle engine light came on took to dealer said it was a transmission code he cleared code and said probably do to the temp change that week but come back if it comes on again next day transmission was slipping took back a shifting switch in the tranny was bad. it still shifts like crap after being fixed its a automatic, over head cpu keep resetting it self to metric 2 to 3 times a week, loud vehicle idles very rough

This is my first Jeep and probably last. Terrible gas mileage and a maintenance nightmare if you have to work on it. Even changing the oil is a hassle. Check engine light is always coming on and going off.

The car has some good points ice cold air, great sound system ,and oh yea 4 wheel drive!!!but the biggies were poor gas mileage, some what of a rough ride even on the highway, could use a little larger engin like the Chevy Blazer 4.3 liter vortech v6 "what a nice 1 that was"and the price could have been a little kinder.28k for a little fun ride? Come on!
