This Year's Model Updates:

A new five-speed automatic tranny provides a second overdrive ratio, resulting in greater fuel economy and reduced NVH in models equipped with the 4.7-liter V8. Chrome front tow hooks are now included if you get the skid plate group on the Limited model, while the Laredo model offers a Special Appearance Group package with 17-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels, colored metallic front fascia and body cladding, body color license brow and liftgate handle, fog lamps, body side stripe, and leather seats. A hydraulically driven engine-cooling fan improves fuel economy on the 4.7-liter V8 and a quarter-turn fuel cap improves efficiency at the gas station. Limiteds get an AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player as standard equipment, along with new "Euro-style" gathered leather seats as optional. The Trailer Tow Group now includes an underdash connector to make plugging in aftermarket trailer wiring harnesses a snap. Finally, child seat tethor anchors improve the Grand Cherokee's family-friendly nature while a LEV-compliant 4.7-liter V8 makes this Jeep more earth-friendly.

Pros:
  • Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.
Cons:
  • Quadra Drive whine, mushy seats detract from long-haul comfort, spotty reliability.

I bought this Jeep and have used it like a Jeep. I off road, carry friends and dogs, tow my boat, and load it up with cargo for a weekend with the guys up in Vermont. Overall, I love my Grand Cherokee, this is my 2nd one, the 1st being a 97. I just turned 100,000 on it and have had absolutely no drive train problems. It drive to NC frequently and the trip is always comfortable. The ride is great for a solid axle SUV, replace the shocks with Bilsteins for an even better ride.

I leased this vehicle new in 2001 with 6 miles on it. Liked it because it had two tone interior, rather than the one color (dark grey) fits all that most new cars use in the interior. Now has 57K with no major problems, other than brake rotors once at 30K, repaired under warranty, and leak in the sunroof, also repaired under warranty. Still looks as good as the day I got it, inside and out, and it has been left outside in the Northeast. Will be coming off lease in April and I plan to buy it. I dont like the looks of the 05 Grand Cherokee, but it does ride and handle better than the old model. The old Jeep has classic styling that Im afraid we will not see again.

Heard lots of negatives beforehand, but with the exception of the front rotors (repaired once, then replaced 2nd time), I havent had any problems whatsoever. And, my local Jeep guy made sure that the rotor work was covered by my warranty, even though it was past the 12k-mile brake warranty. Other than that, its been a pleasure to own!

Has been very reliable with 116k on it now and runs like new, but has been well maintained. Like others, have had problems with the brakes, but have replaced only once although the problem was extreme. Get great gas mileage for an suv, averaging 18-20 mpg with 4.0L and 4x4. Very capable off-road. Has been used heavily for towing and other truck responsibilities. Overall, not bad. Certainly better than my other domestic brand experiences.

  • BA-A-AD BRAKES - GOOD LOOKS - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I love the looks of the car. I am happy with the comfort level and the room and the safety of 4WD. I am most decidedly NOT happy with brake rotors that warp even before pads need to be replaced!! I mean, what is up with that?? All in all I would NOT buy another Jeep just because of the brakes.

Got mine in 08 with 80k miles. I put another 100k miles on it before it was totaled in a wreck in 12. I loved this car. It was comfy and nice to drive. It had its problems, but thats to be expected with its age. Most of the issues were electrical: window motors going out, tail lights going out and check engine light came on and no one could figure out why. But I loved it and it will be missed.

Well I bought my 2001 Jeep GC Limited 6 months ago now with only 36k. I got a pretty good deal on it a $10,450. After a few problems that the dealer took care of for the most part it seems to be a pretty good truck. The Heated seats didn’t work when I bought it (dealer took $1000 off because of it.) The night I drove it off the lot the heat went out on it took it back to the dealer and they had to replace a door the HVAC system. Another month later the ABS light came on and ABS stopped working, it turned out to be a bad speed sensor Dealer paid 50% on that. However on my way to the dealer to drop it off for the ABS the heat went out again. It was a different door in the HVAC system.

  • Good vehicle, but not great. - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I like the vehicle. It is tough. But, comfortable. The six cylinder engine has decent power. If you want power get the 4.7 liter. The transmission is a bit rough when its shifts when a passing gear is needed. Gas mileage is not bad. I drive on the highway most of the way to work and I get 20.4 mpg. I have the select-trac 4x4. I like being able to leave it in 2WD mode for normal conditions and when needed 4HI or 4Low. However, I did have major problems with the drive train.
