This Year's Model Updates:

A new five-speed automatic tranny provides a second overdrive ratio, resulting in greater fuel economy and reduced NVH in models equipped with the 4.7-liter V8. Chrome front tow hooks are now included if you get the skid plate group on the Limited model, while the Laredo model offers a Special Appearance Group package with 17-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels, colored metallic front fascia and body cladding, body color license brow and liftgate handle, fog lamps, body side stripe, and leather seats. A hydraulically driven engine-cooling fan improves fuel economy on the 4.7-liter V8 and a quarter-turn fuel cap improves efficiency at the gas station. Limiteds get an AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player as standard equipment, along with new "Euro-style" gathered leather seats as optional. The Trailer Tow Group now includes an underdash connector to make plugging in aftermarket trailer wiring harnesses a snap. Finally, child seat tethor anchors improve the Grand Cherokee's family-friendly nature while a LEV-compliant 4.7-liter V8 makes this Jeep more earth-friendly.

Pros:
  • Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.
Cons:
  • Quadra Drive whine, mushy seats detract from long-haul comfort, spotty reliability.

Only thing comforting to know here is sadly, Im not the only one with the same problems. Just had the governor sensor and solenoid, and a snap ring replace for $650 at independent mechanic. I have basically had a total rebuild of the engine cooling system, radiator, water pump, radiator, (2) cooling fans. Total rebuild of the brakes twice. Every window regulator has broken, 5 different times on various windows, and am at the point that my passenger rear is going unfixed. Luckily I know how to fix that cause it is a $400. I live beachside and had garage kept the vehicle and it has thoroughly rusted through the roof in a matter of 2 years. Moon roof, gone. Windshield, cracked. Unbelievable!

Generally we like it. Depreciation is HORRIBLE!! How about this drop in value? When we bought it 2 years ago, it was worth about $27K. Two years later, its worth $15K private party. About a 20% depreciation per year!!!! outrageous. At this rate, it wont be worth anything when Im done paying it off in 2 more years. I like the V8 power, and its never given us mechanical trouble. Suspension sways from side to side pretty badly on turns though.

This was the second Jeep Cherokee that I have owned, the first was a 1985 2- door Pioneer. This one was nothing but problems, transmission, radiator, stalling, etc... The vehicle was towed twice (the roadside assistance was the only thing I could rely on!). Gas mileage combined never was better than 16.1 mpg. The Goodyear tires spin on the first sign of a damp road. I traded the Jeep with 9,500 miles for a Volvo S60 AWD, awesome car! It will get me through the NE weather just fine without havinf to walk.

    >1yr. old-rotors have been replaced Jeep has been recalled potential fire hazard - transmission jumps, lunges, bangs into gear at almost any speed. Dealership said this is normal for electronic transmission. BS. Safety is a major concern when a 4000 pound vehicle lunges into gear at speeds around 60 mph. DiamlerChrysler has called this violent jerking motion a "burp" and a "bump". Market value is adversely affected by this defect. They tried to fix the defect one time by installing spider gears that did nothing. After that they decided it wasnt a problem after all. Dummies, why try to fix something if nothing is wrong? DO NOT BUY THE NEWER JEEPS

  • First Jeep... maybe the last. - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Purchased in 2005 with 54,000 miles, now has 101,000. Drives great for an SUV, corners like a sports car. Getting around 18-20 on the highway. Only things have gone wrong are two speakers have blown, both heated seats went out, power steering pump, driveline seal, some interior parts are not quality made. other than those few items this Jeep has impressed me since the day I bought it. Still get looks when Im driving it. Looks brand new still. Probably will not buy another Jeep, because of the reliability issue.

  • Dont bother extending the warranty.... - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

As has been the case with past reviews, this vehicle needs brakes once a year. Find a person who knows brakes or youll have ample opportunity to learn to fix them yourself. Gas mileage is average.

The abilities of this car lived up to my expectations. Unfortunately, during the 50k miles I owned it I experienced pretty much all of the problems other people have reported. The transmission was repaired once (wouldnt shift from 2nd to 1st after coming to a stop), warped front brake rotors twice, the hatch lock motor replaced, a window regulator replaced and the drivers seat frame broke on the left side where it bolts to the floor. I bought an extended service policy that took care of the most expensive repairs. The steering wheel doesnt look or feel centered with the seat and you replace the entire door panel if you want a factory replacement for a worn arm rest pad ($400 part).

I love driving my Jeep, it is so much fun and so reliable! I drive in snow almost 7 months of the year and it handles great in the snow. It gets me through anything! I have recommended this vehicle to family members and friends and would recommend to anyone. I have not had any problems with it and I dont think that I ever will. It has been awesome!

  • Very good overall, brakes problematic - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The beauty of this vehicle is it is relatively small for an SUV with the power of a V8 and 6300lb towing capacity. You wont find another vehicle that can pull as well that drives like a car when you arent pulling. Things I dont like: front brake rotors will warp under normal use every 10-15K miles and will need resurfacing to prevent shimmy. Jeeps warranty on this is 6K, I think. Also think front seats could be a bit firmer. Poor fuel economy when towing about 5500 lbs---about 9 mpg. Rear end makes a whirring noise when moving very slowly (5 mph or less), but is normal. Other than brakes, no real problems.
