This Year's Model Updates:

A new five-speed automatic tranny provides a second overdrive ratio, resulting in greater fuel economy and reduced NVH in models equipped with the 4.7-liter V8. Chrome front tow hooks are now included if you get the skid plate group on the Limited model, while the Laredo model offers a Special Appearance Group package with 17-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels, colored metallic front fascia and body cladding, body color license brow and liftgate handle, fog lamps, body side stripe, and leather seats. A hydraulically driven engine-cooling fan improves fuel economy on the 4.7-liter V8 and a quarter-turn fuel cap improves efficiency at the gas station. Limiteds get an AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player as standard equipment, along with new "Euro-style" gathered leather seats as optional. The Trailer Tow Group now includes an underdash connector to make plugging in aftermarket trailer wiring harnesses a snap. Finally, child seat tethor anchors improve the Grand Cherokee's family-friendly nature while a LEV-compliant 4.7-liter V8 makes this Jeep more earth-friendly.

Pros:
  • Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.
Cons:
  • Quadra Drive whine, mushy seats detract from long-haul comfort, spotty reliability.

Really only one problem with this vehicle. Brakes...twice back into shop for adjustment. All other aspects seem very good...no other problems whatsoever.

Had brakes in for repair several times. Finally had new rotors installed by brake specialist (they claimed Jeep should have had a recall because of original brake quality). Just had the transmission replaced at 89,000 ($3900). Have been driving all my vehicles for last 40 years over 100,000 miles and never had to replace transmission.

I bought a 01 Grand Cherokee limited 4wd V8 from Dedham Auto Mall in Dedham, MA and I couldnt be happier. The dealership was great and so isnt the car. I use this car for both on-road everyday driving and occasionally off- road when I get a chance. Its the best. I havent had a single problem with this car and it is the second new body style grand cherokee I have owned. I love it, and I will keep it as long as I can until I want a new Jeep.

I bought this car at the end of 04 with 45k mi for 13 Gs, It is a loaded 4.0L/2WD Laredo. Front speakers were blown, no problem just fade to back, still sounds great and is still like that today. Had a couple of cooling system problems the first year, but the 1st shop didnt fix it right so it should have only been one...$300. Bad coil pack and heater hoses in year 2...$540. Oil changes, tires and brakes years 3 4 5...all maintenance so it doesnt count. The only other cost is window regulators, which to me is maint. too since Ive never had a car where they didnt fail. So $840 in repairs over 5 years...I feel blessed! No rattles, suspension is tight, engine strong, paid off...love it!!!

Bought in 05 with 65,xxx miles on it. Other then routine maintenance, just switched out the alternator. Been through 3 serp belts,no idea why. CD player is crapping out on me. Front two speakers are going out. Cooling fan went out at 89,xxx. At 126,xxx, needing new relay switch, A/C light wont come on unless the defrosters are on. Alignment keeps going out. Rear axle keeps leaking. Fuel pump is starting to go out. All not major problems...but when they add up it gets annoying. My favorite part is that the car leaks water every time it rains. The weather stripping is fine except for around the sunroof. No mechanic I know can figure out why it does...

As a former Jeep Wrangler owner, I had high expectations when I purchased my used 2001 Laredo with 29K miles on it. After 10.5 months of ownership Ive spent the majority of my time at the dealership for repairs....random engine surging (!!) [it only took 3 visits for them to address], electrical, transmission, warranty recall items, rotors... Now, after transmission slippage due to a bad solenoid, (out of warranty by 2.5K miles of course...)there are newly presented oil seepage and pressure issues...caveat emptor! BUYER BEWARE!

Weve owned our 01 Limited for almost two years now. Had warranty work done for the brake rotors and the driver side heated seat. Dealer service was excellent. Ive owned 4x4s for many years and this one is top notch. We have the Up-Country package, which is handy for the off-road stuff that this rig is suberb at! The AWD in snow has a different feel that takes some getting used to, but it gets you where you want to go. Our Jeep is very solid and fun to drive as well as having some nice luxury touches. You can spend much less for an SUV, but then again, what the heck do you work so hard for?

  • A real 4x4 vehicle - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This Jeep has exceeded all expectation. Its full time 4 wheel drive with Quadra Trac II transfer case The 4.7 V8 with full tow package oil and tras coolers make this Jeep a real workhorse. It has had minor problems considering I abuse this truck. It goes through mud, snow, climbs and forges water like its made for. Yes I have replaced the rotors 3xs but thats because of the inferior Asian steel that they are made of. replace with a set of slotted rotors & ceramic pads problem solved. Im running LT truck tires instead of the P passenger car tires it comes with. rides a little stiffer but a small sacrifice for towing and off road use. I did replace an axle bearing in the rear but at 100k!

  • Good SUV, but lots of minor problems - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Bought this GC new in 2001, and really enjoyed it for the first 3 years or so, with just routine maintenance. For an SUV, Im happy with the MPG at 20-21. I still have enjoyed driving it, in the last few years several minor (and 1 major) problems have popped up. Headlight assembly cracked, causing the inside casing to become fogged. Each of the front power windows have failed (causing the window to slip down in the door. Of course, the first time this happened it was raining, the second time it was about 102 degrees!!! Brake rotors become warped about once every 18mos. Bad catalytic conv. at 90K & replaced tranny at 125K mi. Still fun to drive but the rep.& maint. is really annoying.

  • Loved and hated it - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I loved my Grand Cherokee and it was a perfect fit for me at 63. But it had plenty of issues... Poor fuel efficiency became a pain as gas kept rising higher and higher. The belt in 3 of the 4 power windows broke at various times, causing the windows to sink down into the door. Always seemed to happen during the winter when it was freezing. Just last week my engine failed and needed to be replaced. Had about 90,000 miles on my jeep. $6000 for a new engine, $3000 for a rebuilt engine. Decided to get a new car instead. Im excited to be getting 28 mpg with my new car, but Ill miss the Grand Cherokee.
