This Year's Model Updates:

A new five-speed automatic tranny provides a second overdrive ratio, resulting in greater fuel economy and reduced NVH in models equipped with the 4.7-liter V8. Chrome front tow hooks are now included if you get the skid plate group on the Limited model, while the Laredo model offers a Special Appearance Group package with 17-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels, colored metallic front fascia and body cladding, body color license brow and liftgate handle, fog lamps, body side stripe, and leather seats. A hydraulically driven engine-cooling fan improves fuel economy on the 4.7-liter V8 and a quarter-turn fuel cap improves efficiency at the gas station. Limiteds get an AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player as standard equipment, along with new "Euro-style" gathered leather seats as optional. The Trailer Tow Group now includes an underdash connector to make plugging in aftermarket trailer wiring harnesses a snap. Finally, child seat tethor anchors improve the Grand Cherokee's family-friendly nature while a LEV-compliant 4.7-liter V8 makes this Jeep more earth-friendly.

Pros:
  • Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.
Cons:
  • Quadra Drive whine, mushy seats detract from long-haul comfort, spotty reliability.

  • lemon is not my flavor - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

car was great until we hit 13000 miles. It was all down hill from here. The electrical system has been a continuing problem as well as the transmission, fuel injectors and cooling system. The car was in for service 7 times over a 9 month period, with no resolve. Safety was a major concern. Thank God for the pro- consumer lemon laws of Illinois that got our money back and lease terminated. Never again.

  • Many problems at 122K - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Every week or so, I have another problem with this car. In the past two months alone, my check engine light went on ($400 fix), my control module computer went haywire ($140 to diagnose and reprogram), my alternator died ($160 - the shop did the labor for free). Now my transmission is dying and Im selling the car at a big loss just to get rid of it. On the rare occasions it does work, it still has the infamous rear-end clunk, is way too top-heavy, and costs a ton of money in gas. If youre looking for a reliable car, look elsewhere.

  • Best car I ever had - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought it used as I did not care for the body style of the new Jeeps. This car has far exceeded my expectations. I have had it for over 3 years with very little mechanical problems. Mostly only normal maintenance. The car is fun and fits me like a glove. This is my second Grand Cherokee and it wont be my last. I have done a little off roading in it and it handles great!! Very good in snow and ice.

  • Good vehicle, but not great. - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I like the vehicle. It is tough. But, comfortable. The six cylinder engine has decent power. If you want power get the 4.7 liter. The transmission is a bit rough when its shifts when a passing gear is needed. Gas mileage is not bad. I drive on the highway most of the way to work and I get 20.4 mpg. I have the select-trac 4x4. I like being able to leave it in 2WD mode for normal conditions and when needed 4HI or 4Low. However, I did have major problems with the drive train.

  • I will never buy a Jeep again! - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought this car in 2004 and have already had to rebuild the engine (cost me $7500) and fix the heat. The heat was completely out and cost me $1500. Everytime something else goes wrong, it doesnt surprise me, I guess it is to be expected. I have a lot of other problems as well. So, I guess I have a brand new car, it only has about 3000 miles on it and I paid more for the repairs than the car was worth. I will NEVER buy a Jeep or a brand affiliated with Jeep again!!! I was informed by the mechanic that has done all my repairs (he used to work for Jeep) that Jeep Cherokees only have a life expectancy of 125K miles, thats crazy!

  • Save your rebate to pay your repair bill - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I am currently trying to figure out how to get rid of this vehicle. I have alot of time to do this since it is in the shop with transmission problems again. I have had the brakes redone 4 times in 53k miles, the transmission is currently out, and we have had various electrical problems along the way. It has been 8 times that I can think of in 53 k miles. I had a Honda and a Toyota before this with no problems. I will never buy a Chrysler product again. If you buy this vehicle, buy a good extended warranty (0 deductible), because even $100 deductible adds up. And save your rebates and incentives. Youll need them.

This is the 5th Jeep and 3rd Grand Cherokee weve owned (1987 thru 2001) and all have been excellent vehicles. Mechcanical reliability (all had the long proven 4.0L engine) has been outstanding. On the 2001 LTD I did have some front brake rotor vibration at about 30,000 mi, but the entire assemblies were replaced under warranty and no problems in the 16,000 mi since. This car is both sharp looking, very comfortable and tough. It;s the best 4wd vehicle I have driven in snow (Maine winters). The 1998 Laredo I gave to my daughter is still going strong at 150,000+ with only brakes, tires and shocks replaced.

  • Limited Options and Performance - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

We bought the Jeep as other SUVs became too car-like. We knew what we were getting, had modest expectations, and they have not been exceeded. Not very high praise for a $40K vehicle! Jeep didnt offer a 5 manual transmission option, and the automatic transmission simply sucks - I will not by another Jeep for this reason alone. Once we got past some intital quality problems (loose cables, etc), the vehicle has ptherwise performed well (except for the poor gas mileage).

  • Great Entry SUV w/a few nec. upgrades - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

The Laredo w/leather and heated seats, Infinity Gold sound package, selec trac, moon roof, and cd chngr is a great buy and drives nicely. The upgraded 235 65 17 tires are hard to find cheaply. The optional 245s are better on the SUV in Ohio climates. For the money, the Laredo with upgrade options is a great vehicle and you dont need to pay for the "limited" markers unles a V8 is absolutely nec. Laredo does have a V8 option with out the Limited price.
