This Year's Model Updates:

A new five-speed automatic tranny provides a second overdrive ratio, resulting in greater fuel economy and reduced NVH in models equipped with the 4.7-liter V8. Chrome front tow hooks are now included if you get the skid plate group on the Limited model, while the Laredo model offers a Special Appearance Group package with 17-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels, colored metallic front fascia and body cladding, body color license brow and liftgate handle, fog lamps, body side stripe, and leather seats. A hydraulically driven engine-cooling fan improves fuel economy on the 4.7-liter V8 and a quarter-turn fuel cap improves efficiency at the gas station. Limiteds get an AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player as standard equipment, along with new "Euro-style" gathered leather seats as optional. The Trailer Tow Group now includes an underdash connector to make plugging in aftermarket trailer wiring harnesses a snap. Finally, child seat tethor anchors improve the Grand Cherokee's family-friendly nature while a LEV-compliant 4.7-liter V8 makes this Jeep more earth-friendly.

Pros:
  • Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.
Cons:
  • Quadra Drive whine, mushy seats detract from long-haul comfort, spotty reliability.

The drivers seat is uncomfortable.Jeep could take a lesson in seat design from Honda. There is a "clunk" in the rear suspension. Ive had it checked out several times. Its blamed on a broken shock, but the shocks are fine. The sound stops when there is about 100lbs placed over the rear end in the cargo area. Also if a light duty shock is used.

  • King of SUVs - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is the one SUV that all the competitors fear. It has tremendous off road capability. I have taken it on beach sand with heavy ruts and loose drifting sand. No problem at all. It can handle anything. Try that with the fake SUVs put out by the competitors. Who knows more about four wheel drive than Jeep? My wife drives this one, and she absolutely loves it. (She owns Ford stock, but we bought this new. We also have a Liberty).

  • Last Jeep for me - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have always loved Jeeps. I had five new ones before I purchased a new 2001 fully loaded. I have had four brake jobs, replaced the steering wheel, the drive shafts, the window regulator, the water pump, the speakers, several sensors, major transmission work, the battery, electronic ignition problems. It was bad enough having to do these things to a $32,000 car, but the treatment from Chrysler and the costs have soured me on any more of their products. Since I have always taken excellent care of my autos, this car still looks like it did the day it left the showroom 4 years ago. Brand new condition. It is parked in my garage, and I drive my Infiniti. Too bad because I used to like Jeep.

  • 7+ years & still going strong - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

We bought the 01 JGC new and now with 86k miles let our college age son buy into it. Loaded Laredo w/leather, 4l i6 with Selectrac. Its been very reliable: of course we replaced the brake pads/rotors @ 35k and 85k mi (2nd time was planned). Also did seat heaters 3 times but under ext warranty. (liked it enough we just bought a new 07 similarly equipped but 4.7v8 for towing). I follow sched a maintenance & have not had problems, our mechanic says the i6 Selectrac is best SUV ever. I would have rated this one higher except its now compared to the new 07, not really fair.

On the first drive it over heated 2000 miles it needed new rotors. 5000 miles did not idle good, reprogramed computer did not fix it. 8000 miles power steering noise, did a recall to it. 9000 miles more power steering noise, replaced belt plus tensioner. 18000 miles steering was binding could not fix it with another recall but now it only happens when very hot outside. Still didnt idle right they replaced a sensor ( did not fix it ) 21000 miles mecanic found bad computer that controls idle but chrysler wont replace it yet because they dont know how to program the new one, that was around March 2002, in now Dec 2002 they still cant fix my Jeep.

  • Great Vehicle-Wish Dealer Was - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Overall-the car has been excellent. Reliable, responsive, great looking. However, when a warranty item needs service, dealer will try to wiggle out of it. I was told "There is no such thing as a bumper-to-bumper warranty!" And the extended warranty is another joke. Sunroof leaked when car was 100 miles over the 36,000 mile limit. Dealer charges $250.00. I was told by dealer to contact Chrysler...they couldnt help me.

  • It wasnt bad at first - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This Jeep was a dream until I found out that this jeep lunges for no apparent reason, it jerks, and i have taken it in and no one can really tell me a specific reason why it does this, I would not reccomend this jeep, not unless the manufacturer takes a look at what is causing this lunge

  • Some Good - Some Bad - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I purchased my new 2001 well into 2002 and it was a spur of the moment purchase, which was unfortunate because I should have done more research - I may have passed. Its been a nice ride, but dont expect it to have a long life.

  • My Second Cherokee - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

This is my second 4WD Jeep Cherokee. I bought because I had such a good experience with my 1991 (which had over 250k miles on it when I sold it). My 2001 has 90k miles on it and, other then normal maintenance (I change the oil regularly every 3k miles) it has been a great vehicle for me. I plan to keep it for another 5 yrs and will likely replace it with another Jeep.

This is our fifth Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee. We have found the vehicles to be very dependable. We have driven on long trips through the Arizona desert in August. We have driven in the cold Nebraska winters. They perform wonderfully in all situations.
