This is one of the best "Trucks" you can buy, if not THE best. Solid, tight, dependable, durable, powerful, a real workhorse. More interior room than any mid-size SUV, and smaller exterior than the big brutes. Plenty of back seat room for 3, plus lots of cargo space. Very easy to drive around town, but will go anywhere if you like off-road adventures. Ive been to the beach, mountains, and on some very rough rocky and steep trails. The low gear will crawl over just about anyuthing! My teenage daughter would rather drive the Trooper than Moms car. The TOD works perfect in bad weather. This is just a very good do anything,go anywhere, vehicle.

  • Oil User after 60K - 1999 Isuzu Trooper

I love this vehicle except for one thing and that is it uses 1 quart of oil per 500 miles. Isuzu knows there is a problem with their 3.5 liter engines, but wont recall them. After the warranty ends at 60K, they start using a lot of oil. The only solution is to replace the small block, which costs about 2 grand. I figured if I just keep adding oil, it would only cost me about 30 bucks a year. I know there are a lot of posts online about this, but Isuzu will never admit it. I love the vehicle other than the oil usage. I had two Isuzu vehicles in the past with few or any problems, this is the first one, I guess they just tried to catch up with the big U.S. SUV too quickly

  • Great Price, Great Ride - No Regrets! - 1999 Isuzu Trooper

I have been lookin for a Trooper for over a month; never was able to track one down because they would be sold within a few days of being at a dealership. Now I know why! These are excellent trucks. 4x4 TOD system rocks. Tackle anything really tough just shift to 4L and go for it. I have the luxury model. I would recommend the luxury model to everyone; it is really worth the extra bucks. The moonroof is huge, twice the size of a regular one. Engine performance is great. Regular driving on highway at 80 is nice & quiet & smooth. Gas mileage is as with any SUV, dont expect it to run on water; you can switch to 2WD which allows you to add a few MPG.

Good room for a mid-size. Great throttle response and power but if you want to tow anything above 2000# you should look at something with a v-8 as mileage drops in half. Better in every way than same year four runner or pathfinder and still has japanese quality. Paid 19.5K with 4800 miles. Depreciation has still been bad. Suspension is mushy around town but libertys, yukons, and denalis cant keep up on washboard roads.

  • Still runnin strong - 1999 Isuzu Trooper

I purchased a 99 Isuzu Trooper 4WD new and have never had any problems besides normal wear like shocks, tires, brakes. Very reliable truck. Excellent power to weight ratio.

Great. Nice, big, & roomy. Interior very flexible for putting things in (seats down/up, etc. + other unique features). Poor gas mileage - 12-14 mpg around town.

I bought this vehicle used with 160,000 on it. I didnt make it one month before it needed major repairs, I was told it was the transmission, by several different mechanics. Took it to a trasmaission shop they switched out the transmission and $2700 later they took it for a test drive and guess what it was still doing the sam thing. Turned out to be the alternator not the transmission. Havent had it back a week and the muffler dropped on it. Than within one more week the motor starts knocking, not a good sign.

  • Beware - 1999 Isuzu Trooper

I bought the Isuzu Trooper because I saw great ratings on Edmunds, but my experience has been poor thus far. I bought at 85K and thank goodness I bought an Eagle extended warranty. In six months I have replaced the starter after sitting in a parking lot for 6 hours waiting to be towed on 4th of July. Then came the alternator and the engine at $3,200 was just replaced under warranty. My mechanic told me although I saw great ratings on Edmunds he has seen nothing but problems over and over again with the ones he serviced. "ENGINES are always a problem with these"...he told me! I still like it, but dont buy one without an extended warranty!

  • 1999 Original Trooper Owner Review - 1999 Isuzu Trooper

We have had no problems with this vehicle and have nearly 45k on the odometer. The vehicle is built solid, has no rattles, has exceptional visibility, enough power, and excellent brakes. The brakes should easily reach over 75k based on an inspection at 40k..Fuel mileage averages 17 mpg. This vehicle can go places in 2wd that most of its competition can only traverse in 4wd.I expect 200k out of this vehicle without any replacement of the powertrain.

  • 130k mileage, uber-dependable in Colorado - 1999 Isuzu Trooper
    By -

Bought it used in 2000 with 13k miles; now have 130k. This car is a beast in Colorado, smashes through blizzards and snow, pulls out cars when in 4 Lo, carries lots of stuff when skiing. Still have original brakes at only 50% usage and that includes lots of driving up/down the mountains to ski and a few 4WD drives up to 13,000 feet. Also holds my 3 kids in the backseat nicely. Love the tons of interior space; its like having a Suburban without the excessive length. Truely have had only two post- warranty repairs: Transmission seal and Torque-On-Demand vaccum replacement. Total cost around $900. It does burn oil as others say but I can live with that and hope to for another 5 years.
