This Year's Model Updates:

Though it may not look like it, Isuzu has completely revised the Rodeo from top to bottom, giving it more modern styling, a user-friendly interior, more V6 power and added room for passengers and cargo.

Pros:
  • Silky V-6 engine. Stylish interior. Rugged exterior. Roomy rear seat.
Cons:
  • Disconnected steering. Lousy 4WD button placement.

I have put 50K hard miles on my Rodeo in less than 3 yrs. bringing the total miles upto 160,000.Twice a week I drive 130 miles over three different high elevation mountain passes.I have always felt safe and never gotten stuck.I have made a few minor repairs(brake pads twice, alternator,EGR,fuel pump and I had to disconnect the horn ) and now it appears that the computer may be going out.Sometimes it dies immediately after starting up, idles roughly, & there is a minor delay in the acceleration. The Check Engine light comes on, but it will not give the code reader a code. This sucks, but I am more than happy to put in the time and $ to fix it.

I purchased my Isuzu Rodeo as a used vehicle with 6450 miles on it. I have since added another 81,000 miles, and have absolutely no complaints about the vehicles performance. Outside of standard maintenance (changing fluids, brakes, tires, charging the A/C, etc.) and proactively changing both the timing belt and water pump at 60,000 miles (no mechanical problems with them), I have only had to change 3 sensors (drive shaft, power steering and O2). Ergonomically, the dash is laid out very well, the A/C and heating vents are well positioned, visibility is excellent, the arm rests on the door and console are comfortable, and the cargo space is very good. My cloth interior wears very well.

I bought the vehicle with 10,000 miles and now have over 55,000 miles. I added a towing package and find very little problems. I like the interior and exterior design. The replacement items have been the ABS modulator and keyless remote over four years.

  • Good, Reliable Car - 1998 Isuzu Rodeo

I bought my second Rodeo in 1999. I have had it for 10 years (140K miles). I have maintained it well, and not had any significant problems. It is a V6 with a manual transmission and 2 wheel drive. It is a great city car and good in the mountains and dirt roads, fun to drive, has very good power, gets reasonably good mileage (18 city, 22 hwy) and has been very reliable. Downsides - the seats are a little Spartan, and it does have a truck-like ride (also a positive, since it is one rugged vehicle). Also, at about 100,000 miles, it did start to use some oil - I have to add a quart about every 2,000 miles, so not quite enough to get by between oil changes. I am going to miss it.

  • Great Car - 1998 Isuzu Rodeo

Bought it new in 1998, on the recommendation of Edmunds.com and have never regretted it. The engine is truly incredible. At 125,000 miles it hasnt leaked oil, lost power or experienced any reduction in the gas mileage. It just keeps going. Like any car, you need to perform regular oil changes, and a 100K mileage service check (e.g., to change timing belt, fuel pump etc.), but Ive experienced no major problems. As a used car purchase, it would make a great beater car for an outdoor enthusiest/college student.

I had a 94 rodeo prior to purchasing this vehicle used in 99. The 94 rodeo had a few mechanical problems and rode somewhat rough. The 98 rodeo has been a very good vehicle, virtually no problems. It rides fairly good for a truck/suv, and has been on many long distance trips (1000+ miles per trip).

  • No Major Complaints - 1998 Isuzu Rodeo

Bought one of the first "new Style" rodeos in late 1997 just after the birth of my first child and now after 2 other kids just cant get rid of it. The damn thing keeps going with just doing regular mtc. no major repairs or down time. Never babied it either. Still have it today as my "beater" an will drive it over my 2003 Audi A4 and 2003 Honda Oddyssey on occassion cause it feels so damn good. I wish I could fit all 3 car seats in it and I wouldnt have bought the van.
