This Year's Model Updates:

Though it may not look like it, Isuzu has completely revised the Rodeo from top to bottom, giving it more modern styling, a user-friendly interior, more V6 power and added room for passengers and cargo.

Pros:
  • Silky V-6 engine. Stylish interior. Rugged exterior. Roomy rear seat.
Cons:
  • Disconnected steering. Lousy 4WD button placement.

Bought this because it was one of very few SUVs with V6 2WD & Manual tranny. After 6 years and almost 120K miles, no major complaints, no mechanical problems. Even w/ 2WD, handles rocky, rutty winding mountain dirt roads nicely. Downsides: Too many recalls. (Dont ignore the recalls. The most recent one regarded reprogramming the ABS, and it made a noticeable difference.) Paint on wheels started peeling early on.

I bought this vehicle to help move my brother to PA. Granted, the time we moved him was in December with lots of snow. The rodeo performed better than i expected (except for gas mileage). For a car i bought because it was the only one left, i am quite happy with it (so far). I primarily travel in it. so the seats could be more comfortable. They dont do too well on anything over a few hours drive. so far, though, i am satisfied even though ive only driven it about 8 mos because i considered it mainly for traveling. i was going to get rid of it when i purchased it. now i am keeping it.

Our Rodeo has 157,000 on it. Ran the thing all over the east coast.Bought it used with 29,000 on it. The upper spring perches rusted off of the frame rail.Frame still looks good though. Bought some perches from a junk yard down south, they look new. If the weld comes out ok, we will run this vehicle another 157,000. Now only going to be used for new england winters. Does use more oil than it should,we just keep an eye on the level.

  • I love mine! - 1998 Isuzu Rodeo

I got this Rodeo after having owned a 93 Rodeo. I am planning on buying another one! I love it, I lived in Ohio and went to college in Tennessee and my Rodeo got me through dozens of long trips over the years and remained solid. I love the toughness of the vehicle and the ability to keep running. I maintained the truck with oil changes, belts, tires, etc. I have had a few minor problems, one fan went out that cost me $200, and I have a small coolant leak right now, but what do you expect at 160k miles! I have put nearly 100k miles on the Rodeo since purchasing it, and feel I have more then got my moneys worth. My husband and I call it "Old Faithful"!

  • Great Light SUV - 1998 Isuzu Rodeo

I love my Isuzu and have beat the hell out of this thing. Rolled it once on ice, smashed into a fence post, and ran over the guard rail when I fell asleep on the way home one night. It keeps on ticking with out any issues except using some oil. Horrible gas mileage but other then that great SUV!

  • My "Beater with a heater" - 1998 Isuzu Rodeo

I bought this rig that ran but had an overheating problem. Previous owner said the water pump was bad. I paid $600 for it cuz it was in poor shape. I replaced the water pump and timing belt but it still overheated. Common problem with the Rodeo (3.2L)V6 were bad head gaskets. Since it was a project vehicle, I had time to work on it. I spent many weeks going from head to tail repairing/replacing issues with it. The SUV is somewhat unrefined (due to age) but I love driving it. Major issues with this car is the frame rusts out from rear axle back and is a recall/safety issue. I love my Rodeo and though I dont "Off-Road" with it, it is great even with 206,000 miles on it. Love it!

  • The Plague of 1998 - 1998 Isuzu Rodeo

I leased my 98 Rodeo for 3 years and then bought vehicle at the end of the lease. From the beginning I had nothing but problems including having the brakes worked on 8 times in 3 years. Just after warranty, I spent about $1500 more on the brakes and they still were not right. Also had fuel injectors go out that costed about $500. And had to have the bracket holding the rear spare taken off to remove the tire. Nothing good to say about vehicle except it does look good.

  • 2nd Rodeo - 1998 Isuzu Rodeo

I love my 98 Rodeo; its my 2nd, the first was a 97. I have had some costly problems with it however. At 97,000 miles, a transmission, numerous sensors, fuel indicator, and other small things. The body, living in the sun, is still in fantastic shape and the truck is large enough to fit my family but not too bulky. Can go just about anywhere in it. The gas mileage could be a little better.

  • A True Sport-Utility - 1998 Isuzu Rodeo

I have driven a 98 S V6 model for over a year now. 200+ ponies is useful when you have to commute L.A.s toughest freeways, and the rear cargo area is large enough to hold all my musical equipment. The only problems I had so far is: 1) fuel gauge is inconsistent, and 2) ABS and Check Engine lights go on and off intermittently. Thats it. This is the only SUV that works hard and gets 19+ mpg...

  • great performance! - 1998 Isuzu Rodeo

Considering the resale value of most suvs these days the rodeo is a steal. Its performance is grade A, while its exterior speaks for itself. Interior is nothing to brag about but it has everything a person would need on a day to day basis. 4WD is a breeze with the push button operation. I used to own a jeep cherokee and the rodeo blows it out of the water in everyway. Well worth the money so far, and Im sure it will continue to impress me.
