This Year's Model Updates:

Bigger inside and out, the redesigned 2001 Elantra boasts stylish sheet metal, a refined 140-horsepower engine and improved noise, vibration and harshness characteristics. Poised to tackle the best in the class, the Elantra comes well equipped for less than $13,000. Though the useful station wagon model has been stricken from the lineup, a five-door hatchback is set to debut next year.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details, wagon no longer available.

  • A fine vehicle at any price - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

When I travel I often rent out mid and full size cars. More often than not I look forward to going back home to my Elantra GT. The driving dynamics are perfectly suited to my tastes. Not too soft and handles expansion joints with aplomb.

  • Satisfied with our Hyundai - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

We have had our 2001 Hyundai for almost three years and 52,000 miles now. We have had a few visits to the dealership for minor problems, most within the first few months of ownership. We still get right at 33-35 mpg on the highway and 25-27 in town. The engine isnt as quiet as it was new, but it still performs the same way. There are no annoying rattles in the car, except when there is loose change in the cupholder or something to that effect. All in all, it has been an excellent choice for us.

  • Fun wore off - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

I really liked this car when I got it because of the price, lightweight body, peppy motor, 4 doors/roomy back seats, and leather interior. Now that I have had it a bit, I am unhappy with vibration in the steering wheel at 75+mph and am unhappy with the extreme vibration of braking the car when at modest speeds..esp on downhill slopes - very unsatisfactory. I also dont like that the US version engine is dialed back esp. in the lower power band. This car needs a mod-chip to reclaim that low-end power.

  • Great Little Car, Better Dealer Service - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

I have 47,000 miles on car with no problems to date. Have enjoyed car so far. But the best part seems to be the excellent dealer service. Dealer will get car in and out quickly, and will provide a loaner car if my car will not be immediately available! With the new JD Power survey results (Hyundai is number 2 for quailty), Im hoping that the resale value will start to hold better. As for me, I will drive this car for at least another 100,000 miles or more(unless I trade it for a new Sonota).

  • Nice Car, Horrible Company - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

While I enjoy driving my Elantra, and I cannot come close to saying the same for the company.7 months after purchasing they had made 7 attempts to fix it.The company paid me no attention until I filed for Lemon Law arbitration. The car was fixed another time between them contacting me the week before arbitration and offering me a settlement. The light recently came on again, #10, and now it is like pulling teeth to have them at least honor their agreement.Nevermind the fact that they will now be able to resell my car to another poor customer and make more profit off of it, they are now trying to make me pay for the scratches on my car which is being replaced.

  • Great car for the money. - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Have had only one problem when I brought the car. Alternator did not function properly. The dealership ordered the part and it was replaced within a week. Car is always on the road.

  • Its been Great - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

This was my second new car purchase and I had been researching the Elantra for a while. I was really impressed with the standard features, reviews by other owners and the price. It has been reliable with no real problems. The only complaints I have are the drivers seat doesnt adjust very well. It seems to move with me like it is not latching very well. I havent had a chance to take back for a check-up on that. My other is just about the dealership. Their selling practices are a little "high pressure". Other than that, I am very pleased with my Hyundai Elantra.

  • Watch Out For Faulty Airbags!!!!!! - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

Though we loved our GT, weve had problems with the front/passengar airbags twice (dealer had to replace module once, then the connector). AND, when we got into a front-end collision at 35mph (hit a truck t-bone), our airbags failed to deploy. Dealership is giving us the runaround as is Hyundai corporate. Just watch out.

  • Not worth it - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Check engine light was on and had to take it to dealer 4 times for fixing. The canister was leaking (imagine, on a 1 year old car!). 1 month back the cassette player got screwed. Resale value really sucks. Major service required every 6 months. Spent almost $600 on service the 1st year!! If you consider all this and the fuel economy, buying a Honda/Toyota really works out cheaper. Do your math, find out the true cost. Buy this ONLY if upfront cost is really important to you. Even then, I would recommend buying a used Honda/Toyota instead of a new Hyundai.

  • Not sorry I bought it! - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

I bought mine for the warranty and price. I did a lot of research 1st, & couldnt find anything bad. Loved the test drive, bought the same day. I dont get as good of gas mileage as it seems others do, but it is very comfy & smooth riding. Had the gas tank problem, (cap not on, check engine light), but they didnt charge me to reset it. Does also dent easily from shopping carts. Love pretty much everything else.
