This Year's Model Updates:

Bigger inside and out, the redesigned 2001 Elantra boasts stylish sheet metal, a refined 140-horsepower engine and improved noise, vibration and harshness characteristics. Poised to tackle the best in the class, the Elantra comes well equipped for less than $13,000. Though the useful station wagon model has been stricken from the lineup, a five-door hatchback is set to debut next year.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details, wagon no longer available.

  • Its been fairly reliable so far - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Bought new in Dec 01. So far, no MAJOR issues with the car its been mechanically sound and reliable at 104K miles. The couple of times I took the car in for warranty-related work, the dealer refused and wanted me to pay (it was electrical issue). Seems like warranty work is a hit/miss with dealers. Ive had only minor annoying electrical problems so far, like the dash clock not working (took it apart and repaired myself), turn signal switch intermittent (repaired myself), side mirror heaters no longer work, air blower switch position 1 doesnt work, several bulbs in the dash burned out (including the headlights numerous times). Steering vibrates at above 60 MPH intermittently.

There is a recall on the Lower control arms due to salt in given states. Look it up. Mine failed at 137K miles. Dealer fully covered it. 5 SP GLS

  • Loved My Elantra - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Had my elantra for 8.5 years and had NO problems. Started up every time. Performed routine scheduled maintenance only. I bought it straight out of college. Would not have just upgraded, except I wanted 4 wheel drive after a bad winter last year. Was worth way more to me than trade in value. Gave it to friends in need of a car.

  • Happy until now! - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

I was fairly happy with my car for the price until recently. For the price, I feel that I got what I paid for. Economy! Rides okay, somewhat comfortable, cute, compact and so on. Recently I put it it for some repairs. The engine light came on. Also, the latch for the trunk wasnt working and the passenger air vent slats were coming out. Well the dealership said that the vent was broken due to hit being hit, well I disagreed. So Im trying to fight it.

I bought my 01 Elantra gently used in 2002, because it appeared to be the best value. And it has been. Ive not had to pay for any major repairs in the 7 years and 100,000 miles Ive owned. Def. the lowest cost to own car Ive ever had. The car is not sexy, so Ive been a bit bored with it ( since I bought it), but will keep driving until it starts needing major repairs.

  • good for the pirce - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

I bought this 2001 Elantra GLS 5-speed back in 2001. Im in the market for a new car now, after about 8 years and 130,000. The car still runs fine, but little things like the power windows, catalytic converter, etc. have given me reason to buy another car (possibly another Hyundai). The car was 100% reliable through out most of its life so far. I have driven it through all kinds of weather conditions, and even drove it cross-country. Despite two low-impact collisions, only cosmetic damage was done the car drove on as if though nothing happened. I still have the original clutch on it, and it works fine! I think its time to retire this one it served its purpose, and served it well.

  • just bought it we will see - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Just bought this car today, its a beauty. I love the interior design the Windows are smoked so I dont have to get them tinted. The previous owner put in custom sound and custom rims and it drives like a dream. I bought the car with 4 recalls on it and the dealership already advised me they will fix them with no cost and provide a rental. I only gave it "8" because Ive only owned it for 7 hours now.

  • Some issues, but a good car overall - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Had my GT for 2 years and have 18k miles on it. Overall very pleased. Reasonably powerful and rides nice enough. Minor issues like sporadic engine racing at idle, clock stopped, and flaws in paint. Interior quality is surprisingly good and the parts seem to be good quality. Some cost cutting is obvious. The protectors that cover the bottom frame of the doors seem to be nothing more than thick pieces of tape, not plastic like in most cars. The heel of my shoe scraped right through one of them to the paint. Since the resale value is not up to par with Honda or Toyota, make sure you plan to keep it for a while. For the money, though, this is a nice car!

  • Good Value - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

I purchased my 01 Elantra in early 2002. To date, Ive had no significant repairs, and have sunk very little money into the car. Its not the fastest, greenest, most luxurious, or best performing car on the block. But it is very reliable, and has just enough comfort, safety, mpg, and performance to make it passable. If youre looking for a great value, and reliability in a commuter car, this is it. Nothing fancy, but it does the job, without time in the shop. ( Which can be a huge deal if your husband needs to borrow your car all the time because his Saab is in the shop every week!)

  • Have had this car seven years! - 2001 Hyundai Elantra

First let me say that Hyundai sticks with you all the way with their 100,000 mile power train warranty. They fixed the differential in my car at 95,000 miles free of charge! I never incurred any major repairs other than worn parts. And its been a gas to drive. Steering is very responsive and the standard drive provided excellent gitty-up especially in the mid ranges over 40mph. I would buy it again but the exterior of the 2009 model is just plain looking and they discontinued the hatchback.
