  Tough to find a better car at this size - 2016 Honda Pilot

  We shopped for almost a year before we made up our mind on this car. Cars we considered : Toyota, Acura, Lexus, Volvo, Nissan. We got out of a 2012 Odyssey Touring Elite and wanted to keep the space but make it a little more grown up. All other choices are great but here is what we found: All other cars a pretty much useless in the 3rd row for adults but I being 62" fit in the back seat comfortably in the Pilot. There is actually space that you could load something with the 3rd row up (Most other cars had no space at all). Very spacious front row seats , better than in the Odyssey for people with long legs. Safety equipment is off the chart. For a car with a factory entertainment system its hard to find a lower price. And for all the people that say this looks like a minivan, go look at it in person. It is much better especially with the 20" rims on it. Trust me I hated driving the Minivan, this is a welcome change. The pick up on this car is outstanding, I have to drive it in eco-mode to not speed! Car handles very well, no idea what people are saying about a bad handling, FYI this is a big and heavy car but it handles great. It has electric steering which has multiple upsides but one of the downsides is some disconnection with the "feel" of the road, maybe thats what they are talking about? This car is more quiet when driving than my $60K Lexus. Quality inside is outstanding for the cost. Some suggestions for improvements. Flip down armrest to be a little stockier. It isnt flimsy but it looks it. Maybe its just mine but the transmission is a little jerky on the downshifts. I will have it looked at, maybe Im just too picky.

  I am a car snob. I prefer to have a loaded SUV that keeps up with the Joness, but last night I purchased a base LX Pilot to be practical. No leather, no sunroof, no CD, and no XM...oh me! Husband was pleased with my decision to purchase a lesser expensive car than my last four over the past 20 months, God love him! The last car was his choice, GMC Acadia SLT with everything imaginable. Great "entertainment" but awful gas mileage and absolutely no reliability (in my eyes) as I dont like being on side of the road in a 47k vehicle! Anyway, we got rid of it and I started looking for practical car for my 100 mile days. After researching the 2016 Pilot, I was excited but then I couldnt commit because I wanted a more luxurious interior. I drove everything "nice" but couldnt get the Pilot out of my head. The Pilot made sense. After losing so much $ on the past two cars, I worked a deal on a base model and drove away with my new Pilot last night. Since driving off the lot last night, I have put about 130 highway miles and 70 city miles on the Pilot. So far Ive used about 1/4 a tank of gas! I have grown to love the simplicity of the radio/Bluetooth/iPod/Heating and AC system as its nice to be able to drive and touch buttons without having to read a screen or select 70 things! The seats are crazy comfortable! I didnt miss seat warmers today because the cloth is like a nice cozy blanket instead of freezing leather. The armrest, well I hated it until today when I was in and out of the car 100 times! I realized Im not slumped over on the center console and I was much more comfortable! The cargo tray is my favorite, nothing sliding in the cargo area is amazing! My only two issues today, no sunroof and the sunglasses holder is too small for my big ole sunglasses! So for anyone who wants a solid, comfortable SUV...give it a chance, glad I did!

  This is an excellent suv; way much better than a Tahoe/Yukon /suburban (did have a very bad experience with a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe); it is my second Pilot and I do love it; the quality is there.

  Made the right decision - 2016 Honda Pilot

  We considered the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander and Subaru Outback, the later being considered largely because of its mileage. I think we would have been happy with any of the three but we LOVE the Pilot. I read all the reviews on here and elsewhere panning the touch screen entertainment system and complaining about the 9 speed transmission and while I think I understand the reasons I dont agree. We have found the touchscreen to be responsive and easy to use, after you get used to it. Its not extremely intuitive but unless youre just renting the car for a day or two, read the manual. Once you become familiar with it, its responsive and easy to use. It does have a glossy screen and fingerprints can readily be seen which is a little annoying to my wife. I would say we chose the Pilot over the Highlander for 3 reasons; the AWD system is superior, theres more space in the 3rd row seats and it gets better gas mileage. Mileage was part of the reason we only considered the 9 speed but I really stressed over going with that transmission given all the negative comments. I will say this, it does hunt for gears but it seems that should be expected, I mean it has 9 speeds, all of which are probably passed through before you get to 60 mph. I dont mean its particularly noticeable accelerating to highway speed, quite the contrary, its smooth as silk accelerating. When its somewhat noticeable is when it is shifting down at lower speeds, more so going down hill. I dont consider it to be a big issue and Im satisfied with our choice of the 9 speed. As for my hoped for mileage advantage, so far we are satisfied there. We recently went through the better part of a tank of gas on two trips, mostly highway miles. Over 369.3 miles we averaged 27.02 mpg and no, Im not relying on the trip computer, said computer claimed 25.5 mpg. Honestly I expected something more like 24 mpg. As for the two trips measured; the first was 120 miles from an altitude of 3,500 ft to around 1,200 ft (trip computer listed 29.5 mpg for that leg) and the second was a round trip for the remainder of the miles. While our average speed for most of the trips was in the 70-75 mph range a good 10 miles was in stop and go traffic (one hour). We kept the vehicle in ECON mode for most of these miles and I do think that makes a significant difference. I dont expect this kind of mileage on all our trips but I do think the 26 mpg hwy rating is fair. Ill let you know what I find in city and combined driving sometime later. Things Im not crazy about are the Collision Mitigation system which as others have said is a little touchy, especially if you are a somewhat aggressive driver. For my wife its probably perfect but for me its too sensitive, especially if Im in heavy traffic. On the other hand it does have an on/off switch. Same with the lane keep assist system which at times misreads heavy tar lines as road paint (not frequently but sometimes). Also, if you forget you have the system on and go to switch lanes without signaling the system will fight you a little.....as I said, it has an on/off switch too. Overall I like both systems but they can be improved. Finally, the auto-engine-stop system works fine but if youre somewhat aggressive pulling into traffic from a stop you need turn it off or be aware its on because there is a slight lag if youre quick off the brake to the gas. This system had an on/off switch but unlike the other systems mentioned it must be turned off each time you start the car. Again, this will never be a problem for a cautious driver and its not very intrusive when its working but for me, I have to be very aware. All in all, this is a VERY fine piece of machinery that has really impressed us. So far, my wife and I are extremely happy with our choice. We love the car and would recommend it to anyone considering a suv/cross-over AWD.

  Okay, I get it. Some here hate the 9 speed transmission, and I almost settled for the EX-L as a result of those reviews, but I am happy to report that I ignored those folks, did my own investigation and I am glad I did. The 9 speed is different, and it takes some getting used to, but it is very, very smooth. The sport mode is fantastic for movement down steep mountain grades and combines nicely with the new suspension that allows for sharp cornering without feeling top heavy. It actually corners better than many of the cars I have owned. On the highway, the 9 speed transmission is as smooth as butter and really delivers an awesome ride. In town, the 9 speed transmission performs well too. When I drove the car home from the dealer, I did notice a difference during the stopping, slowing down process. What I concluded is that the sound of the transmission differs from the normal 6 speed in that it does an audible "rev" that in my opinion fools the driver into thinking the car is speeding up. After a few days of really paying attention, I tried to manufacture a "rev" or lurch but just couldnt. I am not saying the issue is in everyones head, but what I am saying is that the transmission behaves differently and that the behavior takes some getting used to--just like anything new. It may also require some adjustment of driving habits too. I am still feeling it out, and by no means want imply that others impressions are incorrect. But I will say, had I relied entirely on some of the negative views here, I would have gotten an EX L, and I would have missed out on the Touring, which in my opinion is a hands down winner. Not to mention the value gained by stepping up one model! Just my thoughts.
