This Year's Model Updates:

The Windstar now has standard power-adjustable pedals and an optional rear-seat video entertainment center. There's also a new trim level called the Limited. Available midyear 2000, it will contain more standard features than the previously top-line SEL.

Pros:
  • Top-flight safety equipment and ratings, plenty of interior features and options, sonar backup warning system.
Cons:
  • Floaty ride, restricted legroom for second- and third-row passengers, noisy engine.

  • Happy with my Windstar - 2000 Ford Windstar

We bought a Windstar SEL new in 2000. The car currently has 22,000 miles and except for standard maintenance, and one problem with the tie-rod, the car performs great. I wish the gas mileage was better, we currently get about 16 mpg, mostly around town driving. This car has lots of utility, especially with kids, dog, etc. The entertainment system is a godsend for long trips. The removable seats let me load up lots of stuff on frequent trips to Home Depot. This is a really nice vehicle.

My husband and I got our Windstar from my dad when our family grew too big. Only had one problem which was covered by recall (blinking lights, gauges wouldnt work, warning noises on and off when we stepped on the brakes... all because of a missing seal in the rear of the van) and the work was done in two hours at our local dealer.

  • Many mechanical problems - 2000 Ford Windstar

A year after purchasing my Windstar was in the shop for over a month ( 5 different occasions) Once they sell it to you it is your problem. I have purchased 5 fords (4 taurus before this lemmon) I will NEVER buy Ford again. They have gone back to the 1970s with built in obsolesence! When I went to return the car on a lease return, all the told me was that I should go into another lease because I did not want to own a car with 40k mi because it will most likely break-down. No Thanks. 3 yrs 36k is too little Ford does not stand behind their product. I am going to shop Honda Toyota tomorrow. If you are considering this van DONT!!!

  • Not up to par - 2000 Ford Windstar

Power steering went out at 59,000 miles. Not covered by warranty. Transmission went out at almost 100,000 miles. Steering control is poor on this vehicle. Removing seats very difficult. Paint finish (red) chips off easily. My 93 Escort had a superior paint job.

  • Money Pit of Vans - 2000 Ford Windstar

I purchased this van used, with 39K miles. My family had outgrown a SUV, so we went with the Windstar. After 2 months, I needed a power steering pump. Now it is making that groaning noise again. At 53K the transmission completely failed. It cost me $2,200 for a rebuilt, and Ford told me that they would not help. I am getting rid of this van as quickly as possible. I may never buy a Ford again.

  • Its gonna cost you! - 2000 Ford Windstar

Purchased with 32K. Had Windstar for one year and felt a "thug" on transmission. Thankfully I bought an extented bumper to bumper 3 year warranty for $1,800. Tranny went at 37K! Would have cost me $2,300. Now the front windshield wipers work only on the "fast" setting, passenger seat belt doesnt work, electric side door has problems closing, interior lights go on whenever. Paint on roof rack peels, engine is loud. I bought this car for my family need the room. It looks nice and its interior design is interesting for the passengers. But, if you plan on buying this car make sure you buy a least a 3 year warranty. If you dont you will spend at least $2,000 in the first 18 months. Good Luck!

  • So Far So Good - 2000 Ford Windstar

Bought the Windstar in preparation for the birth of our second child. So far she has been a solid performer and never let us down. Not thrilled with the wind noise and gas mileage but does have some punch when you hit the gas. I had once vowed never to buy a mini- van/bus but find the utility of the Windstart to be top-notch. Next minivan will be the Honda Odyssey unless Ford steps up to the plate with third row fold-flat seat, better gas mileage, reduced windnoise and less mushy handling.

  • The Ford Windstar - 2000 Ford Windstar

This Windstar has 26,000 miles. She runs great! This is our second Windstar and they keep on getting better. The legroom and headroom is much better than the Freestars. I give this car a 10!

  • Next van will not be a Ford. - 2000 Ford Windstar

Only reason for buying van was the low price I aquired it for & having 3 children. All kinds of things were replaced under warranty (previous owner). At 40,000 miles a valve spring broke! As of now, 5 yrs old engine light showing, rear side defroster not working, driver door lock not working electrically, passenger sliding door rattles & paint peeling! Glad I didnt purchase it new. Wish I had not of purchased it at all.

  • Ford doesnt back up product - 2000 Ford Windstar
    By -

This is our second(and last) Windstar minivan. Our vehicle has been plagued by a pervasive and enigmatic problem involving the complicated traction control and theft deterrent system. This problem causes the vehicle to fail to start up at random intervals leaving us stranded. Ford seems helpless to find or fix this problem despite over a month total time in the shop since purchase. Two Ford engineers have examined the vehicle, each in turn declared that the problem was found, reproduced and repaired, however the problem continues to this day. Trade in day! and not on a Ford product.
