This Year's Model Updates:

The Windstar now has standard power-adjustable pedals and an optional rear-seat video entertainment center. There's also a new trim level called the Limited. Available midyear 2000, it will contain more standard features than the previously top-line SEL.

Pros:
  • Top-flight safety equipment and ratings, plenty of interior features and options, sonar backup warning system.
Cons:
  • Floaty ride, restricted legroom for second- and third-row passengers, noisy engine.

  • Good but could be better! - 2000 Ford Windstar

This is the 3rd minivan we have owned. The other two were Mercury Villagers. The Windstar is more trucklike in both ride and feel than the Villagers. It is also much roomier than the Villager, and the remote electric door opener feature is a nice touch. Also like the styling of the Windstar, and the dashboard is a little more ergonomic than the Mercury.

  • Best pre-owned value for your money - 2000 Ford Windstar

We bought the vehicle pre-owned with 80K miles on it. Primarily we wanted something bigger than the Honda CR-V that we traded for this van. My family was used to the Expedition we had before that so from the CR-Vs perspective, this was a pleasant upgrade. Also this model had leather, wood, etc. and automatic rear doors that help us a lot with a 5 year old and a 7 year old. Car has been nothing but comfort for us. The only work ever done on it other than routine oil/tires and consumables has been a dead battery (expected at this age) for $50, a top engine seal vacuum leak @ $140.00 and thats it! Exceptional for a FORD vehicle.

I have also had the tie rods go on my van. It has been in the shop numerous times for minor things. Everything has to be ordered in and it takes forever, I didnt purchase the extended warrenty either and they wont give me a loner even though it is Fords fault that I dont have my van for 5 days at a crack. I like the way the van handles and all but I dont think I will ever own another Ford vehicle and this is my 5th one. (Does that tell you anything!) Not to mention did anyone else notice how much this thing depreciates!!!!! I cant even get $16000 for it and it is only two years old!

I bought this van with 60,000 miles on it. I had some minor work done and have not had a single problem since.

  • Dont buy one - 2000 Ford Windstar

Since the warranty expired, I have spent an average of $1500 per year on non-routine mantenance. It has been a pain in the wallet. I expect to spend money on tires, brakes, etc. But I have had to have to much "other" work done on the van.

  • Ford junk- NEVER AGAIN! - 2000 Ford Windstar
    By -

From 55,000 - 76,000 miles replaced wheel bearings, electrical components, and ABS system. Also, the car stalled while driving, extremely dangerous. Car repairs totaled more then payments. I decided cut my losses and trade it. Dealer said transmission slipped and is worth $2800. After research I expected a loss but that was more than anticipated. So I went home defeated. I pulled into my driveway and it started to smoke and burn up. Lovely. I would like to buy American but Ford has made this American family poor so save time, aggravation, and money by NOT buying a Windstar. Sorry Ford, but theres a reason why the foreign car industry is doing so well, were tired of being taken advantage of.

  • Dont buy a Windstar - 2000 Ford Windstar

Like some others here, we had to replace the transmission within the first couple of years. Van has 68K and needs ANOTHER transmission! Hello! Problems with side door, electrical, mileage only 14 with plenty of highway driving, expensive to repair things like small bumper dings (cant they design bumpers that dont cost 1800 to fix?). Like rubber bumpers or something?

I purchased my 2000 Windstar used in 2003 and it has been nothing but trouble from day one. I have had to replace the breaks at least twice a year sometimes every 3 to 4 months. In 2/05 I had to put a new engine in it and 10/05 the engine blew again and the transmission also went out. The sad thing is that I owe too much on it to just let it go. I have a vehicle that I have to pay for every month and cant drive it! I love throwing away my money on something that is not reliable at all! I have had numerous problems with the power windows and locks. Ford needs to back its products better. Money down the drain!

  • Expensive to repair - 2000 Ford Windstar

We bought ours used with 36,000 miles on it. We have had it almost 4 years and have driven an additional 24,000 and have been fairly satisfied with it, until now. We had small drips in our driveway, so we took it in to the local Ford dealer. Turns out that it needs a new rack & pinion and a transmission rebuild. Apparently you have to take the engine completely out to get the transmission out. Our extended warranty ran out in June. Total repair cost $4,000. We have had some annoying electrical problems (power locks). Dont lose the transponder key ... its over $100 to program a new one.

Whenever Ford Credit called for the payment, we had to explain to them that the van repairs where costing us more each month than the payments and its tough to make the payments, plus the repairs (of course, they could care less). The transmission went out at 44k, the front end is build so weak that the struts went out at 37k, and the front brakes warps so bad that they have been replaced 3 times in 5 years. Of course each thing that had to be repaired went out after warranty expiration. It is amazing how they have engineered a vehicle to fail almost as soon as the warranty expires. If only they would put that engineering skill to good use to build a reliable vehicle.
