This Year's Model Updates:

The light group and speed control are now optional on LX level cars. Chrome wheels on the SE models have been replaced with five-spoke aluminum wheels.

Pros:
  • Cheap, well equipped and fairly powerful.
Cons:
  • The interior is cramped, some of the ergonomics are muddled, and the car is just weird looking.

  • FORD NEEDS TO DROP TAURUS - 1999 Ford Taurus

Nightmare from beginning to end. Spent top dollar on it, and it is now worth little to nothing. At 65,000 miles, transmission dropped, heater does not work, brakes are junk and they have been replaced countless times, electrical is so goofed up that I cant get the power locks to function properly, engine coolant reservoir cracked, oil seals went, sounds incredibly loud while driving, windshield wipers short out and occasionally dont work, keyless entry doesnt work. Ford really needs to drop the Taurus from its line up. It has been nothing but a money pit from day one, and we have done everything to it maintenance-wise. Its terrible on gas, our 2004 Expedition gets better mileage. What a mess.

Too many transmission problems in one year. Heat went out in the middle of winter. Main antifreeze hose broke while driving. Does not like to start on first try in cold weather.

  • Great car - 1999 Ford Taurus

This has been a great car for us. We have owned this car since there were only 4 miles on the odometer and the only repair has been the alternator and that was just this month. I have replaced brake pads once, that was only because I abused them. I am very satisfied with this car.

Car is in the shop more than on the road. Over the last three years, I have spend more on repairs than on paying the principle of my loan. Tansmittion went at 39500 miles (36000 mile warrenty), had the roters resurfaced twice, brakes replaced 3 times (first time at 22000 miles, rack and pinnion steering replaced, emissions problems, fuel injectors repaired, etc. Buy something else, anything else. Nothing but problems. A great car if you would rather drive a rental while yours is in the shop, or if you have an uncontrollable urge to throw money away.

  • Detroit must do better - 1999 Ford Taurus

Bought after light use as an executive rental car. At 37,000 miles, power steering on front-drive car required complete replacement at great expense. Electrical system problematic (wipers turn on without human intervention). Full 60,000 mile maintenance done by dealer. Within one week, battery dead car wouldnt start when hot. Finally died completely. Alternator/generator replacement. Auto transmission shifts taking longer and longer. Transmission locked into third on steep hill, engine lugged up hill, check engine light on, diagnosis: two cylinders blown, substantial repair required. Car being sold as-is, at substantial discount from nominal value, with 71,000 miles. Ford unresponsive.

  • Not an ordinary "family car" - 1999 Ford Taurus
    By -

This is my first car and at first I was hesitant about getting a family car considering I am 16. I have had this car for a year now and I love it. I would never trade this for a some tuner. The 24 valve 3.0 duel overhead cam engine is amazing. I love my car.

Has been a very reliable car, easy accessibility to the rear seat (2 carseats). I think its a fun car to drive and one of the first cars that I havent had any problems with the a/c. I also love the exterior design.

  • Great for Home Depot - 1999 Ford Taurus
    By -

After having a Sable Wgn go 200,000 miles I bought this car used. With new shocks and tires, it runs and looks as good as new. DOHC engine is quick but noisy. Interior looks like it was designed by Rubbermaid and is sterile but comfortable. This is a spare car we use for around town and going to Home Depot. Better than a pickup or SUV. Costs less too!

  • 99 Taurus - the Best, the Beast! - 1999 Ford Taurus

I got a great deal on this new 99 in Jan. 2000. It has the 24v engine & the standard SE package. I drive it 900 miles to Fla. & 900 back twice a year with only an oil change before the trip. To work and church are both 4.5 mi. so it does get up to operating temperature most times its driven. The only thing that has broken is the accelerator cable (June 05) and it took forever to get the part as it seems none have ever broken before & none could be found locally. I love driving this car! It accelerates VERY well, and surprises a lot of "tuner" cars off the line. It gives great mileage on the interstate, but, with my heavy foot I use a lot of fuel. So Im careful. Still 100% stock. Love it!

  • Beware: Head Gasket - 1999 Ford Taurus
    By -

This car is cool looking and comfortable. It is also a LEMON. It has had a blown head gasket twice in 6 months, with about 30k mile on the car. BEWARE! It is NOT yet part of any recall due to this problem.
