When I purchased this Taurus (used), I was looking for one that was pretty well equipped and reasonably low miles. I found this Taurus in Sept. 2001 as a "certified" vehicle with 33,000 miles on it and have been very happy with the car. This car has all available options except leather seats. The power moon roof is probably my favorite option, although the 200hp v6 Vortech engine option was a main selling point of the car ... the additional power was a must for me. The car drives and handles nicely and the mileage currently is at 27mpg! I maintain the car regularly at the recommended intervals and have not experienced any of the transmission woes of other owners.

This has been a fairly reliable car. Used it mostly over the road. I did have to replace brake rotors at 50,000 miles and just had those replacements turned at 175,000. Does use oil 1 quart every 800 miles started using somewhere around 160,000 to 170,000. Had some overheating problems. I also replaced ujoints at 120,000. Some minimal electrical problems. I get anywhere between 23 to 25 miles per gallon consistently drive mostly 75 on interstate. For the money I paid for the car it has been a great car. I am shooting for 250,000 to 300,000 miles. The ride is not the greatest is a bit on the rough side.

  • Electrical Gremlins - 1998 Ford Taurus

Way too many electrical gremlins to list. (Well, lets try anyway: daytime running lights that wont shut off without pulling a fuse, headlights that go from dim to bright at random, electric windows that randomly work, dome light that goes on and off at random, trunk light that goes on and off at random, power locks that suddenly lock or unlock at random....). Transmission is starting to go at 100K miles - at least it has lasted longer than average. Gas mileage stinks - 15 city, 16 highway. Engine knocks badly on regular unleaded. The cupholders wont hold your cup going around corners.

The car has been very good so far. I only had minor problems. Since it does have 90,000 miles this is normal for any car. It rides great and it is by far the most comfortable car i have ever driven. The only thing I cant stand about the car is the inaccurate fuel gauge. It seems to never tell me the right amount of fuel I have.

It is a good vehicle. Very comfortable except like many others I had to get my transmission rebuilt at about 100K. I like the car but I didnt expect replacing the alternator and starter within the first 3 years. I continue to own the car and currently have 130K on it. I expect to own the car for some time.

The size & comfort & room n the back would sell this car. Have replaced 95% of parts under hood. Have put upwards of $3,000 in it, which makes it run smoothly and will stretch the usability of vehicle. Would trust to go from coast to coast. Is scratched from dog jumping on it, so could use a paint job, but not necessary, no rust. sliding seats & seats. Automatic windows, very clean. No fading on dash. Has right arm rest, lifts up or down. Back lift & window n perfect condition. Average gas mileage, less n city, more on highway. Good pick-up. Good tires. luggage rack.

This has been a great car. It never missed a lick. Only replaced battery once, regular maintenance, changed brakes. This engine is great with great response. Average 25 MPG. The car will be missed.

  • Wont buy another Ford - 1998 Ford Taurus

This car (bought new in 1998) has had many things go wrong at a lower mileage than it should, e.g., transmission replaced at 63,000 miles rear brakes at 70,000 front brakes, struts, and a "rotted plug" for the coolant at 87,000 miles (the latter required a major amount of labor, though the part was small). My husband has a 1 year older Honda Accord with about 35,000 more miles on it which has had almost nothing expensive needing replacing. We usually buy cars new, keep them maintained, and drive them until they drop, generally well over 100-150,000 miles. Given how much Ive already spent on this Taurus, I think Ill trade it for a more reliable "foreign" car before anything else goes wrong!

  • GREAT CAR! - 1998 Ford Taurus
    By -

This has been the best car I have ever owned. Overall even better than my vintage Corvette! It wants to GO! And yet is has great creature comforts and a killer sound system. Eventually I will have to move on from my car with 120,000 miles. Unfortunately, Ford has chosen to stop offering this great car. Where will I go now?

  • 1998 Taurus SHO - 1998 Ford Taurus
    By -

Watch for camshaft problems. Otherwise this is a fun car to drive. The V8 provides great power, especially over 50mph. Interior is roomy (Im 63", so I should know). Trunk is very spacious - holds 4 sets of golf clubs. My SHO has over 125K miles on it and is still running like a champ (only major repair was getting the cams welded). If you are in the market for a SHO - get the cams welded!
