This Year's Model Updates:

A mild facelift, revised trim levels and fewer options are the only changes to Ford's midsize sedan.

Pros:
  • Commodious and ergonomically correct.
Cons:
  • Swoopy styling and fish-faced snout leaves us cold.

  • My first American-made car. - 1998 Ford Taurus

Owned only sports-imports until being practical arrived in the form of my first and only child. I wanted a car with excellent safety ratings with strong reliability, low incidence of repairs, and affordability. The Ford Taurus seemed to fit the requirements. Overall, very pleased with two exceptions. The console between the bucket seats has always seemed as though it was an add on feature. Rattles, plastic, cheap. The other very disappointing feature is the body molding around the doors and windows are evidently a feature of compromised value, discoloring and spotting. Tried everything to protect it, restore it. Very disappointing.

  • NEEDS A BETTER TRANNY - 1998 Ford Taurus

My girlfriend and I bought to car with 61,000 miles and the tranny was gone by 64,000 cost $1,100 fix to much for repairs on 98 car with 64,000 miles. I get scared to pass at times because I dont know if its going to shift right. Something you should not half to worry about in a car that has the power of the DURATECH V-6.

  • Transmission is a criminal offense!!! - 1998 Ford Taurus
    By -

We purchased our 98 Ford Taurus because it got such a good rating on the Edmunds and Consumer Reports sites. This car was reportedly owned by someone that worked at the dealership and only had 40 K on the odometer. At 81 K, our transmission failed and we had to get it rebuilt to the tune of $2700!!! This was for a car we were still paying on and had < 100 K miles?!?! Ford wouldnt do anything about it either. If you buy one, get the extended warranty.

  • Been a good car - 1998 Ford Taurus

No major repairs since new now has over 77 thousand miles. 24V engine is very nice. Only a few things about the car that needs addressed. First of all the transmission, since day one, when you put the pedal down to pass someone the transmission is like "What?" and seems confused as whether to downshift or remain in the same gear. Then it jerks after it figures out what to do and finally downshifts. Secondly, it takes about 10 minutes upon initial startup before botton on the gear shift lever will push in. Lastly the bubble design makes rear head room tight and the trunk small. Other than these issues it has been a great car.

  • Excellent Car for the Money - 1998 Ford Taurus

Aside for some finicky shifting and having to replace the rear rotors, I have found the Taurus an execellent car which has provided me with 50k+ miles of near carefree driving.

  • My 1998 Taurus - 1998 Ford Taurus

The kids and I enjoy long drives on the weekends in the Rocky Mountains. There is plenty of room for all of us and a few friends. The Taurus hugs those mountain curves with no problem and the engine is up to the challenge of the hills.

  • Simply a Great Car! - 1998 Ford Taurus

I purchased my 98 Taurs back in February of this year, at first I wasnt too keen on the styling but with time I warmed up to it. Other then that I find that the acceleration and handeling are superior for a car of this class. Braking could be better, and body roll is a bit excessive at times. Otherwise all I have done is changed the oil and put soem new brake shoes on the back. Hope to keep for another year or so before upgrading to something in the SUV category.

  • Great Road Car - 1998 Ford Taurus

This has been a great car, especially as a road or touring car. The car feels glued to the road. It has been a one owner car initially used for my sales job. The gas mileage has been excellent 35 mpg highway/28 mpg city. I have servied this car every 3000 miles and it remains in great working condition. Black exterior and grey interior.
