Have owned a 1991 Taurus wagon before and a 1989 SHO before. Both got better gas milage. This has the standard 12 valve pushrod engine. In town average 16 mpg and on the highway 23. I have fixed 4 problems that came with the car. 1) Power Antenna-cable broke inside drum motor. $18.50 part-my labor 2-1/2 hours 2) Cruise control-Broken plastic ball that holds cable to speed control. 20 cents(4 zip ties) 5 minutes 3) Door ajar light staying & on power door locks poping back up- WD 40, 20 cents worth- 5 minutes. Spray in the door switch plates located in the end of each door. 4)Hood latch sticks-hood wont open lubricate and reattach cable. Bought cheap

Purchased from a neighbors daughter who finished nursing school. Car appears well cared for. Pulled a trailer across the Continental Divide both ways with a U-Hual. They were able to keep it in cruise with AC. I will be the third owner. How it lasts in the long term is to be seen. I keep my cars a long time.

  • Its a so so car - 1998 Ford Taurus

I bought mine at 52K miles and it has served me well. Has had some odd repairs like bent tie rods. (Twice on the same side) Warped roters, and transmission problems. Its still running fairly well but the transmission sticks from first to second.

  • Taurus are Forever - 1998 Ford Taurus

I am a somewhat new driver and I got my Taurus from my dad at like 189,000 miles and by next week I will have 200,000 miles. I drive my car hard leaving from stops and the only thing I see wrong with the car and other Tauruss is that the rear shocks and struts go out at about 100,000 miles, but other than that I love my cat-fish car.

  • 98 Taurus SE - 1998 Ford Taurus

Just got my SE with 152,000 miles on it. It seems to be a good car considering that the previous owner probably doesn’t know what a spark plug is. I find it far easier and more fun to drive than the family Suburban. Visibility is excellent all around, and the car has plenty of power for me, even with the Vulcan engine. For the most part, I like the styling and the cabin layout.

  • would not recommend - 1998 Ford Taurus

Had an 88 Taurus that had 193,000 miles on it before i had to get rid of it...it was a shame. Bought the 98 Taurus with 16,000 miles, and currently have about 120,000. The transmission had to be replaced at about 30,000, but thankfully it was under warranty. The car has always had problems, but never one to warrant selling it. The last 2 years have been plagued with heating issues. Gas mileage is acceptable, and has decent acceleration (although it takes about a half second to kick in after you push the pedal). The car, overall has been more trouble than its worth.

  • Let there be HEAT! - 1998 Ford Taurus
    By -

I have owned my car for three years now and for each year I have not had any heat, I have done work on the car to fix and it still wont work without changing the heater core. I have also had to change the battery twice and the alternator once. I changed my brakes and rotors twice and I am not a speed demon either, the upholstery falls apart and the car just is overall not a good buy! Dont Buy!

  • not a good winter car! - 1998 Ford Taurus
    By -

So I bought my car from my uncle and it had all the maintenance ever needed done to it, and, well it does not have heat, I have flushed the thing out three times in three years and and still no heat - they say that they are notorious for clogging the heating coil, what a waste to buy if there is no heat. It costs too much to get the heater coil replaced and if you live where there is snow in the winter time, this is a Danger Warning, do not buy if you dont like sitting and waiting a half hour before going anywhere to defrost your front window, I get about 15 MPG and this is all at about 112,000 miles. Good luck if you own one.

  • My SHO - 1998 Ford Taurus

Great car I am the original owner and the car has exceeded my expectations in performance and lasting quality. As an engineer, I am still impressed with the power and comfort @ 111,000 miles.

  • good most of the time - 1998 Ford Taurus

Overall, a good car. Most of the time works smoothly, but when something does go wrong its usually expensive. Safety features provide all sorts of quirks.
