This Year's Model Updates:

The 1998 Ford Ranger gets new sheet metal, a new grille and revised headlamps. The wheelbase on regular cab models has been stretched to provide more cabin room and the displacement of the base engine has been increased. A short- and long-arm (SLA) suspension replaces the Twin-I-Beam suspension found on last year's models. A four-door Ranger join the lineup midyear.

Pros:
  • Multiple engine choices. Decent performance. Nice price.

  • 98 Extended Cab 4WD is a fine truck. - 1998 Ford Ranger

I bought a used 98 Ford Ranger XLT, extended cab, 4W drive, with about 40000 miles on the odometer. The Ranger was in excellent condition. I had skid plates and a wrap around grill guard installed for I do a lot of off-road driving hunting deer, upland game birds, dove and duck. I am careful not to abuse my truck but we do get off into some rough country. Highway driving is a pleasure.

My ONLY peeve is the turn signal / wiper control assembly. The turn signal disengages too easily and the wipers turn on sometimes when I signal. This is a Quality problem compared to some other vehicles Ive owned.

Relibale vehivle. First purchase, couldnt afford anything down but 48 monthly payments okay at 0.9 APR. 36K warranty fixed an exhuast problem at 3k since then no complaints and has been a reliable commuter vehicle with the occasional camping trip or help someone move (all truck owners know what Im talking about...) Owns the mountains wiht chains ... cant complain! Small 2.5L engine gets the job done and the 25 MPG aint bad.

  • Impressive - 1998 Ford Ranger

I bought my 98 Ranger in 2000 with just under 27,000 miles on it. So far we havent had many problems with it. The door ajar sensor on the drivers side had to be replaced but that was due to poor installment of an aftermarket alarm. When I got it, it had the wrong taillights on it (i should have inspected it more throughly) and the turn signals werent even hooked up! So I immediately returned it and they replaced them right away. Had to replace the serpentine belt at 30,000 miles which seems a tad early. I used it to haul my Harley to Connecticut and back and it ran flawless. Thumbs up!

With common sense and a "inspection service" we manage to keep our family in late model vehicles at a fraction of the cost of the "Joness next door". Our Ranger was added to our fleet for $4700, he paid $15700 in 98. This Ford has been our best value so far, next is our 96 Town Car for $6900...
