This Year's Model Updates:

The 1998 Ford Ranger gets new sheet metal, a new grille and revised headlamps. The wheelbase on regular cab models has been stretched to provide more cabin room and the displacement of the base engine has been increased. A short- and long-arm (SLA) suspension replaces the Twin-I-Beam suspension found on last year's models. A four-door Ranger join the lineup midyear.

Pros:
  • Multiple engine choices. Decent performance. Nice price.

I started out leasing this truck and by the time my lease was up, I knew that I wanted to buy it. I have taken long trips, hauled everything from refrigerators to sheetrock and have never had to do anything to this truck except change the oil and put in gas. It is a great looking truck and is very comfortable. I now have 113,000 miles on it and I drive it 100 miles a day to work and back. I would highly recommend this truck to anyone who is looking for a small, good looking, economical and trouble free vehicle.

This is probably one of the best vehicles Ive ever owned. EXCEPTION--- front brakes. Right front brake has had serious mechanical problems for the 2nd time now...#1 warranty #2 will be out of pocket. I will be no doubt replacing the rotor, pads and God knows what else.

I have primarily riven Ford products for the last 34-plus years (25 total vehicles). I am increasingly disappointed in the crap Ford provides. I rebuilt the ac twice before 40k miles. The 5-speed auto tranny slips in low gear, the intermittent wipers work when they want to and it wont stay in 4 wheel drive mode. This vehicle is 5 years old and has less than 50k miles, has never been abused and I am a self- admitted maintenance nut. On top of all of this, throw in those wonderful self- destructive Firestone Wilderness AT tires (for which I never received the promised reimbursment from Ford) and you know why I currently drive a Nissan!

This is my second ranger. My first was 89 I traded in on my 98 with 198000 miles on it and still running stong as the next owner was able to locate me. This 98 iasi the 4 door model (option on 500 made in98)Super Cab 4x4 with the 3.0 engine XLT loaded. I now have 98800 on it and am ready to trade on a new if numbers are right. These rangers get me where I need to go on and off road, really off sometimes, never stuck as it has the possie.

I pick the Ranger based on its price, value and its rating in Consumer Reports. It has really been a very dependable truck I would recommend it to anyone.

I am overall pleased with my truck. The 2.5L four cylinder is a dog and lacks sufficient power that you want in a truck, but thats the trade off for a 25MPG truck. The interior is friendly and quiet, although some of the materials are cheap. My only real complaint is that the rear end is far too light and the suspension "jumps" on rough roads and tends to feel that I am loosing control of the truck. The rims also require a special wheel balancer due to desing flaws.

Ive had this truck for 4 years and plan to keep it another 4 years. Its been very dependable and comfortable. The 4 wheel drive is sure footed and it has plenty of towing power for a small truck.

Solid vehicle. Have not had any major problems, but just had to replace multi-function switch at $230.

This is a great truck. Very capable off- road in mud & trails. Truck is also a lifesaver, I fell asleep and rolled my Ranger end over end & sideways 5 or 6 times. There is no practical reason that I shouldnt have been hurt. The truck withstood damage very well. Although it was obviously totaled, I walked away unharmed other than some cuts. Roof didnt cave far & airbags/seatbelt combined with highback seats saved my life. Truck was very rigid & although I now have an Explorer, Ford has earned my loyalty for life. I had little problems with my Ranger, but nothing warranty didnt cover. I feel these trucks will last many years.
