This Year's Model Updates:

This year's changes to the 1999 Ford Ranger include standard 15-inch silver styled wheels, a class III frame-mounted hitch receiver for V6 applications, and a spare tire access lock. All models get dual front cupholders and Dark Graphite has been added to the interior colors options list while Willow Green and Denim Blue have been removed as interior choices. The "Splash" model has been discontinued. A 3.0-liter V6 flexible fuel engine is available that is designed specifically for ethanol/gasoline fuel blends.

Pros:
  • The 1999 Ford Ranger continues to be a cutting edge truck with four-door entry, a five-speed automatic and optional flexible fuel/electric powertrains.
Cons:
  • The 1998 restyled body makes a failed attempt to outshine the current Dakota.

  • I want another one, it is so great, fun, - 1999 Ford Ranger

The best vehicle Ive owned fun, reliable, economical. People think my ‘99 model is brand new. I spend hours taking care of it and it shows. No big problems. Couldn’t even wear out the tires. I love my Ranger. If not for a disability I wouldnt part with it. Not suitable for wheelchair conversion. Too bad for me.

This is the 2nd Ranger that I have owned. My 99 4x4 has been a great truck. I love to drive it and she performs great off road. I take her hunting and sometimes sleep in the back (has a shell). I put on a set of B.F.Goodrich All Terrains and the off road performance got better! I also utilize a K&N air filter and with my 4.0 I get 24mpg. Great Truck, I Love It!

Love the truck, except transmission problems at 50,000 miles and again at 70,000 miles. Ive had enough, Tacoma here I come.

  • 50000 miles and it stinks already - 1999 Ford Ranger

I bought this truck new, thinking I would get years of trouble-free service from it. I have only put 50K miles in 6 years, kept it garaged, regular oil changes. Yet it has developed annoying rattles. The MAF sensor went out on it last year. It runs mediocre and knocks on hills with regular gas. Currently it has another problem where it stalls on start and runs poorly with rough idle. Who only knows how much this will cost to fix. Save yourself some trouble and buy a Tacoma or Frontier. It will cost less in the long run.

  • 99 Ranger - a piece of junk - 1999 Ford Ranger

Not satisfied with this truck and will never buy a Ford again. Too many mechanical problems where do I start? Poor performance with regards to hp (155). Mileage isnt too bad for fuel economy, but can be improved. Hate the flareside (step) bed. The bed lacks enough room for a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Its width is only 41 inches. Dont waste your money on this one, unless youre looking for a toy because thats what this is. With the split bench seat in front, it lacks any storage. The two seats in the back can only seat a child, but still not enough room for safety. Suspension is stiff with Off Road option.

  • Still Seems New - 1999 Ford Ranger
    By -

Ive owned the 4x4 extended cab ranger since 2000, 2nd owner. This truck still seems new to me, even though it has 50,000 miles on it. The only problem is with the 4x4 electrical engagement. There is a problem that will cost me about $500 to fix. Dealer has to replace electrical box on transfer case. Choppy ride is only draw back. Otherwise fit and finish, interior and exterior are still great. Ford replaced the "Firestone roll over tires" for free. All in all Im still happy with this truck, and it is a shame to see such low ratings. Ive been through the new Ford pick-up plant in Dearborn - it is state of the art, and super-environmentally friendly!

  • Total Recall - 1999 Ford Ranger

The only reason I went to the Ranger, after having so many excellent Toyota FWDs, was cost. Ive put only 25,000 miles on my Ranger, and it has performed well. It does well in the snow and offroad, and is very comfortable on the highway. My biggest problem is with the gas mileage, but I knew that before I bought it. Shame on me! Also, I have grown tired of the various recalls. They do make you wonder about the quality of Ford products. (My Toyota pickups had nary a recall in 30 years.)

Pretty reliable. Only had one instance of "down time" when a wire to the oil pan came off and truck wouldnt start. Cost $300 to fix because the local repairman charged $80 to say "I dont know". Took to dealership who fixed it in one morning. Only other problem is with ABS brake light coming on when it rains but ABS braking system is still working.

  • Long Term Review - 1999 Ford Ranger

This is the first Ranger Ive ever owned and has been reliable since new. It has lots of power with the 4.0 and manual trans. The 2500 tow rating is a little underrated as Ive pulled a 5000 lb boat and trailer on occasion for a friend. It had a few quirks when it was new such as the squeaking clutch and clunking drive shaft but the dealer has fixed it with out repeat problems. My kids also love riding in the truck and hauling all kinds of stuff. I bought this truck after looking at all the others and couldnt find a better utility vehicle for my familys needs. It does seem to eat brakes quickly but they are very easy to replace. It has been a great truck and I will be sad when it has to go.

Im really unhappy with this truck. Transmission went out at 37,000 miles when it was out of warrenty and cost me $2,500 to repair. I bought a new truck so I wouldnt have to incur expenses like this. Again at 89,000 miles I put yet another transmission in at $2,500. Ill never by another Ford and Im stuck with this one till I can save up to replace it, shoveling out huge amounts of money to keep it running makes that hard to do. Beware of Ford trucks.
