This Year's Model Updates:

This year's changes to the 1999 Ford Ranger include standard 15-inch silver styled wheels, a class III frame-mounted hitch receiver for V6 applications, and a spare tire access lock. All models get dual front cupholders and Dark Graphite has been added to the interior colors options list while Willow Green and Denim Blue have been removed as interior choices. The "Splash" model has been discontinued. A 3.0-liter V6 flexible fuel engine is available that is designed specifically for ethanol/gasoline fuel blends.

Pros:
  • The 1999 Ford Ranger continues to be a cutting edge truck with four-door entry, a five-speed automatic and optional flexible fuel/electric powertrains.
Cons:
  • The 1998 restyled body makes a failed attempt to outshine the current Dakota.

I love this truck! I bought it used with 225,000 miles on it! No Joke! It runs perfect. It was a Fleet truck for car-quest. Only repairs I had to due are the normal ones with the mileage, alternator and sway bar links. I also just replaced the radiator because of a small crack in the plastic tank but I live on a poorly grated dirt road. I love the gas mileage. Its a 5-speed 4 cylinder and I cut off the stock muffler then threw on a cherry bomb glass-pack and I average 32 mpg, way higher then the epa estimated rating. I found out the ford 302 V8 will fit, planning on getting one. I love these trucks so much I just bought one for my wife( V6 ext cab automatic). Ford Ranger owner for life now.

  • Sporty truck- Caution: Check the Frame! - 1999 Ford Ranger

I purchased the truck five months ago from the second owner and put on about four thousand miles since. With an automatic tranny, the 3.0 v-6 engine is very under powered and performs like a 4 cyl.. When I purchased the truck, the body looked in excellent shape. I noticed rust on the chasis, but it wasnt until later when I really checked it out, that I found severe rusting on the inside of the frame. This needed considerable cleaning and a rust killer application. Also, the body mounts were rusted severely and later cracked, requiring the bed to be replaced at a cost of over $2000. Checked on web and found others with same problem. Same mfg supplied Toyota truck frames, but Toyota recalled.

Just bought this used truck, a 1999 Ford Ranger, having looked around at most other brands. I liked the size and build quality of the Rangers. This truck was very clean with low mileage and quite appealing to look at. However the 3.0 with auto trans is no performer and fuel consumption seems quite high so far. However I didnt buy it for performance and it suits my needs very well. Having read many reports on compact trucks I liked the Rangers score the best.

Lots and lots of never ending electrical problems from year 1. Constantly needed tune ups about every other oil change.

I have had my 1999 3.0 V6 Ford Ranger for about 3 yrs and 62K mi. No major problems, and it is still running great. I like everything about this truck except the ride after 25K miles. After about 25K miles the front shock went out on the right side, then out on the left. Both were replaced under warranty, but in the next 25K miles went out again. I asked the Ford mechanic why this is happening and explained that I do not do ANY rough driving (ie, off road). He said that Ford uses cheap car shocks in their Rangers and my best bet would be to replace them with some good aftermarket truck shocks. An excellent, reliable truck, at a good price (especially used, since there are so many).

  • Great truck - 1999 Ford Ranger

I bought this truck over a GMC S-15 pickup at the same dealer and I loved the Ranger. I put some stiff gas shocks on it and the biggest tire I could fit on it without a lift kit. The truck has a fairly smooth ride and was comfortable for two adults, the extended cab was nice to have for carrying small things behind the seat but not very practical for kids to sit in. Everytime I turned the key it started, the Ranger was the most reliable vehicle Ive ever owned. My only complaint was when I got caight up in a 36 car pileup during a whiteout from blowing snow my airbags didnt deploy, and because of this I lost some teeth and had some other impact injuries because of it. Truck got destroyed

  • Reliable and economical - 1999 Ford Ranger

I bought this truck new. I was a little apprehensive buying American since I have had bad experiences with a GM car. This truck has been very reliable, only had one mass airflow sensor die on me and it was a $100 fix. I put in myself with a screwdriver. Its almost 100,000 miles now and I havent even had to replace the battery or brakes. It just keeps on ticking. Its the basic model with AC so few things to break down.

  • Great little reliable truck - 1999 Ford Ranger

This was the second Ranger I have owned and both were very reliable vehicles. If were not for the rough ride and the need for a larger vehicle for a new baby I would definitely hold onto it. Ive never had any problems when driving it in the last six years (90,000 miles) and got my clear through college. That is if you dont count the time I had to go through the fuel system thanks to my wife putting diesel in my fuel tank on accident.

  • Very Fun - 1999 Ford Ranger
    By -

I purchased my 99 Ford Ranger Sport 4x4 in the summer of 07. Its been pretty good, all things considered. A 4.0L OHV (245 CID) V6 makes this truck take off very well with the 5 speed auto. Its been a very fun daily driver / project truck for me. This is probably one of Ford better products by far. The "Sport Package" really gives this truck a nice edge by replacing the cheesy chrome body accents with painted accents that match the body. This truck is just what I need, not too big and not too large. Id say the pound for pound use you can get out of the truck is much better compared to the full size truck on the market. The Ranger is a very great value!
