This Year's Model Updates:

The high-performance X5 4.6is is discontinued. The 3.0i and 4.4i receive an exterior update, as well as a new all-wheel-drive system called xDrive. A six-speed manual transmission is now standard on the 3.0i, and a six-speed automatic is standard on the 4.4i. The 4.4i also receives a new 4.4-liter engine with Valvetronic and a fully variable intake system. Both models can add Sirius Satellite Radio and Bluetooth hands-free cell phone capability as dealer-installed accessories.

Pros:
  • Rides and drives like a BMW sedan, multiple drivetrain choices, top safety scores, high-end cabin furnishings.
Cons:
  • Less interior volume than a 5 Series wagon, price goes up quickly with options, poor fuel economy in the city.

I have had the truck two months now and am fairly disapointed to the point I am looking for another car already. First the acceleration with x drive is amazing for a V6, and the handling couldnt be better. However for a $50K car there are more rattles then you should have in a car costing half as much. It has been at the dealer twice in two months for a loose bracket on the exhaust and for a loose sleeve on the steering system. There are loud rattles from the rear gate and the dash that make the car seem very poorly built. The ride on a bumpy road is very uncomforatable.

We purchased our X5 with approx. 53,000 miles under BMWs Certified Pre-Owned program and bought the service package to 100,000 miles. The X5 has been great. We live in Denver and drive to Vail almost every weekend. Average MPG is 19.2, not bad for 300+ HP, 5,000# car. Run Pirrelli snows in winter and Yokahoma Geolander in summer. The X5 is remarkably capable off road - Hill Descent Control is very impressive. The only funny part is the looks we get from other SUV drivers. Trips to the dealer for unscheduled service have been minimal and not expensive.

We never really had a major problem, only minor things that the warranty covered.

  • Durable SUV - 2004 BMW X5

I have had many SUVs in the past and this one is the best creation yet. The drive on this SUV is very smooth and the interior is just as attrative as the exterior. This is a well-made piece of art.

Test drove all luxury suvs. Came back to this one again & glad I did. Only criticisms--cannot have hands-free phone along with navigation & BMw Assist. Cannot have Sirius with navigation system. Also, should have video back-up system instead of just audio PDC. Only problem is the PDC needs adjustment. Great, reliable, comfortable suv (sav).

  • My second X5 - 2004 BMW X5

I have two X5s, 2001 & 2004...my wife and I love to drive them..so safe and reliable..the maintenance is simple. Also, the truck qualifies for the Section 179 business tax deduction, a write-off that saved me $17,000 in income taxes. It is only one of two midsize luxury suvs than exceed the 6,000 pound gross vehicle weight to qualify for the deduction.

  • Awesome Vehicle - 2004 BMW X5

Best driving midsize SUV on the market. Fast and stylish enough for male and female drivers. Handling is second to none in this weight category. I can only imagine the 4.4 or 4.8 really gets down the road if my 3.0 drives this well! This is my second one and I am very happy with the updated features of the 2004. Must get the extra large sun roof and xenon lights.

  • poor customer support - 2004 BMW X5

I have only 1200 miles on the car transmision is broken. BMW has offered to replace the tranmission with a refurbished one...wait list of 8 months. Dealership was not willing to help. Apparently this is a problem on this model.
