This Year's Model Updates:

The 5 Series cars carry over from last year with small changes and no price increase.

Pros:
  • Sport sedan and wagon in a luxury-car package.
Cons:
  • Cheap plastic buttons for the power door lock switches are out of place in a car of this caliber, manual transmission in 540i difficult to modulate smoothly.

This car is always a pleasure to drive and its stealth performance is there when you need it. The body style and popularity of lesser 5-series models doesnt turn heads but this car is made to thrill the driver, not the bystanders. Cupholder criticisms aside, the quality and durability is everything that its numerous awards suggest.

The sport seats have nearly crippled me. The seat cushion sags even under my moderate 170 lb. frame. This causes spine to flatten and forces a slouch position. The lumbar support tries to force your spine into normal curvature, but it is poorly positioned, hard as a rock, and not adjustable. Ive never been so pleased with a car, and yet been unable to enjoy it due to the major discomfort of the seats. Ive owned 10+ cars and driven countless European, Japanese and American cars on business trips. Ive never had a seat bother me before, despite very long trips.

Great car, solidly built, nimble at high speeds. Monstrous brakes and the Stability system has saved me more than once - getting itself out of an understeer. There is only one real weakness - the tires. Once I upgraded the tires (wait for them to go on sale, $150s per tire every now and then, though i paid the full 200) i could not have been happier. Now I dont need to endanger all of my neighbors and strangers by driving a car-crash-incompatible SUV and menacing the roads in general. Last winter (a doozy of one on the East Coast), I drove 364 out of 365 days and that the vast majority of rolled-over and road-side crashed cars were trucks like the Explorer and Blazer.

After 18 years of driving many different vehicles, my 540i with the sport/M package is by far the best car Ive ever owned. I recently test drove a M5 and honestly, it feels only slightly faster than my 540i. The car is now 4 years old and still turns heads at stoplights! Especially fun is blowing away the kids in the ricers they dont know what theyre up against! : )Id definitely buy one again..

After owing two previous Toyotas I took a chance on a BMW and have not looked back. Impressed with safety record, handling, power and performance. Definitely would consider purchasing another one in the future. Cant say enough about the looks when I pull up at work now. Thanks

Ive always owned a BMW but only with the 3 series family. However, I finally upgraded to 5 series and its great. It feels heavy bec of lack of power but it has been reliable and has not given me any problem as of yet. I will always own a bmw just bec they are safe. I got into an accident(Truck T bone my car, passenger side) and none or I got injured. Great car.

Quality vehicle. My second BMW (both 5- speed manuals). Saved me big time when hit by red-light runner, so proven safety record. V6 gets me up onto frwy very nicely and out of jams . Exceptional on long trips and gas mileage around 32mpg hwy avg. Only problems have been electronic, as on my 1998 5-series guess its the Germans. Also some seat rattles no one can fix. Ill take manual trans over auto trans any day (Im middle aged female, too!). Now ISO a pre-owned 2003, manual transmission.

  • fun, but unreliable - 2000 BMW 5-Series

It looks good, a bit underpowered, but is fun to drive. However, its reliability is very poor, especially if you owned a Japanese car before. Also, the dealership is always busy, and with its reliability, you might as well onw a second car, otherwise youll be renting alot (the dealership never has any loaner cars).

Everything about the car is great, I just wish it had a little more power.
