This Year's Model Updates:

BMW swaps out the four-cylinder engine in the 318 coupe and convertible for a 168-horsepower 2.5-liter inline six -- these cars become the 323is coupe and 323i convertible (why it's "323" and not "325," we'll never know). Meanwhile, the 318i sedan and 318ti hatchback continue on unchanged. All cars get standard side airbags this year, except the 318ti, on which they are optional.

Pros:
  • One of our all-time favorite cars. Carves turns faster than your dad carves Thanksgiving turkey.
Cons:
  • Price is a bit steep. Interior is a bit cramped.

  • 210,000 miles on factory clutch and counting... - 1998 BMW 3-Series

The BMW 323is (chassis code: E36) is a very reliable automobile with exceptional fuel-sipping properties. Naturally youll have to replace some parts along the way, however they are not as expensive as most would have you believe. Most repairs can be done by even the most novice of home mechanics. The cooling system should be overhauled every 60-80k miles but even with OEM parts the whole task should cost the DIYer no more than $350-400 (radiator, thermostat, water pump, hoses, etc.). The engine is brilliant and I still see 27 MPG as my overall avg. As mentioned in the title, I am currently at 210,000 miles and still on the factory clutch! I will keep this car for at least another 100k.

After long period, finally found my dream combination, which is M-sport package and Cal roof option. This one is equipped with fun-to-drive stick shift as well. My favourite features are too many to list. The best part is, of course, Cal roof then M-suspension/M-interior. The M44 engine always returns 31-32MPG with my driving, yet, it accelerates the ti quickly. The suspension sticks the road with minimum roll. It is not harsh either because BMW engineering tuned stiffness on the seats to match suspension characteristics. In my opinion, E36 is the best 3-series platform ever. As long as it is taken care of, it will drive for many years to come. Will keep it with my 98 M3 sedan.

  • One of the Best Cars Ever Made!!! - 1998 BMW 3-Series

I have had this car a long time now, and I am still amazed at how great it feels to be in it. I love the feel of the road and the sound of the sweet audio from the premium sound system in the car. It is super quick when I need it to be. And it is great on gas. I have only changed the alternator and done the regular mantinence since it was new. The space in the back seat is a little light. But, If I were a parent of 3 kids and needed a great second car, this would be it. I think the car looks so classy and screems traditional BMW style. It is the benchmark by which I will measure all future cars. It looks especially good in Alpine White. Its one to drive before you die. Own one if you can.

  • Fun and Economical - 1998 BMW 3-Series

I bought this used four years ago when it had 84k. It was my first upscale car and I am totally spoiled. The 4cyl feels like a 6 and it can really move the car. The handling is solid and smooth. I believe that the ASC even kept me out of a major accident. Mine is MT and I average about 28mpg around town (although Im a very efficient driver). I put about $1300 into fixing an emissions problem when I first got it, but nothing has gone wrong since - other than taillight problems. Still feels like a new car.

  • The Absolute Perfect Machine - 1998 BMW 3-Series

I cannot complain about many things about this car. My favorite part, performance, is exceptional for a 6 cylinder. The throttle is responsive and the pick-up and 1st, 2nd and even 3rd gear will push you into your seat, even the exhaust has a subtle growl. The ergonomics of the car are perfect. Radio controls, air conditioning controls, gearshift, blinker, headlight switch, seat adjustments... Everything is perfectly placed. The integrity of the interior materials is superb. The leather is strong and the stitching doesnt break. The interior is very beautiful and the exterior of the car is stunning. You have to drive one to see how many heads turn as you drive by.

  • This Is A Real Car - 1998 BMW 3-Series

Whenever I think of a car for the rest of my life, it will be a BMW. Ive had this car for one month and the ride is unbelievable. The tranny shifts so freaking smooth youll think its an autostick. Mine has 72,000 miles right now, and I swear it drives like brand new. It takes windy roads like its on tracks, and Ive already hit triple digits on the highway twice without noticing unitl I looked down at my speedometer! I think that shows that Ive really been driving the heck out of this thing, and Im still averaging around 25 miles to the gallon over 30 when Im on flat highway. I think Hondas and Toyotas and Nissans are great cars, but after a BMW, Ill never be able to drive one again.

  • Always wanted one - 1998 BMW 3-Series

Always wanted a 5 series wagon, but when this came available I couldnt help myself. Other than being very slow off the line this is the best driving vehicle I have ever owned. This car is so smooth at highway speeds (and faster!!), that I cant wait to take long road trips. Have only had it for a few months, so cant say much about reliability other than I am not afraid to drive this car long distances.

  • Fun - 1998 BMW 3-Series

The best thing about this car is that it is fun... cornering is exceptional, handling very predictable. Truly enjoyable... california sunroof rare and makes the car even more unique.
