This Year's Model Updates:

Audi's entry-level sedan and wagon are all new for 2002. Along with a redesigned body structure and new sheet metal, the new A4 receives a variety of changes to make it sportier. It is motivated by either a 170-horsepower 1.8-liter turbocharged four or a completely new 3.0-liter 220-horsepower V6, which can be mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Making its debut this year for non-quattro models is a continuously variable transmission (CVT), also known as multitronic. An in-dash six-disc CD changer and a dual-zone auto climate control top the standard features list.

Pros:
  • Available all-wheel drive, powerful engines, sharp handling.
Cons:
  • Prices shoot up with options.

Excellent all weather vehicle as snow and rain are a mere joke for this car. I have had a few minor problems however if you want bullet proof reliability buy Japanese. Low end power is suspect however once on the move the 1.8T is a great engine.

so ive owned my A4 for about a year and a half, and now im on edmunds shopping for a decent used one. i consider myself a demanding driver and as a performance vehicle, its a great ride. but in the shop 14 times over the past year is insane! clutch, suspension issues, ignition coils... the worst was being a center console (electronics) flake out that left me using a loner for a week. CONSIDERING aftermarket chip? risk screwing that powertrain warranty and youll have the sweetest looking lawn ornament in town. i wanted this thing to work cause its sweet looking package. but ive learned much more about cars than i cared to through this headache.

Overall this car is great. The design of the interior and exterior is second to none. Minimalist with depth is the best way I can describe it. It is truly the cars best feature. The seats are tight and spartan (base vinyl package), which does not bother me but annoyed others. The CVT drive is smooth as silk at speed but off the line it can jump. I have learned to control the acceleration better though I suppose since it rarely happens now. The low end torque leaves something to be desired but once the turbo kicks in you are off to the races, i.e. 1 second after you hit the accelerator.

I purchesed the A4 AWD auto in december 2002 in florida $3,000 below sticker price, knowing that I am relocating to washington, where awd would be usefull and dealers will not budge $500.00, it sure serves the purpose during rainy days, had to replace the master cylinder so far (warranty), the car looks great without even the 17" wheels and sports package.

Expect to spend a lot of time at the repair shop if you buy this car.

So far this car has been a pleasure to drive. It is fast and lively, especially while in the manual shift mode. The multitronic transmission is sluggish in the automatic shift mode, so having the ability to shift manually saves the day. It is virtually impossible to turn the wheels on Quattro versions, which is good. The sport suspension is taut (perhaps harsh to some) and responsive. Cabin noise is muted. Controls are well placed and the red and white illumination is gorgeous. The leather is top-notch, as is the fit and finish of both the interior and exterior. Audi makes just about the finest interiors Ive ever seen. This is one fine German machine!

When I purchased this car for 39,000.00 I thought I was buying a reliable car. I quickly learned that this car is anything but reliable. Thus far the blinkers went out, the windshield wiper blades broke, the sterio died, the coolent hoses were leaking the starting coils went out and the entire dash board system failed so the car read 140 mph all the time. Now my check engine light came on last night and the car was in for service 1000 miles ago. I am now looking to trade my car in on a much more reliable car like a Honda Accord.

Love the way this car tracks, but Im not satisfied with the power. There are very few cars that are slower off the line. This car needs about 40-50 more horsepower to be competitive. Low end torque is also weak.

Was skeptical about buying a first model year car. Additionally, our last 1999 A4 was plagued with mechanical issues. However, Audi service is excellent and made up for our troubles. We took the plunge and bought this car anyway (for a wagon, its gorgeous). 6000 miles thus far with no problems. Car is much better all around than previous model. Very happy with purchase.

  • Dissapointing A-4 - 2002 Audi A4

Bought car new, traded a 99 2.8Q, had it for a week and had to return for a clutch"adjustment",they actually replaced the clutch. First snow storm my windshield wipers failed completely @ 2000 miles. The driver side seat squeaks like crazy, the trunk never closes correctely, and now @ 11000 miles the sunroof sticks when it closes, very fun when it rains. Oh for potential and current owners avoid the front end bra. I had mine dealer installed, it flops like crazy over 80 miles an hour, it will destroy your paint job, dealer says its just the way it is. It looks cool though it doesnt work, kind of like the car it was designed for.
