This Year's Model Updates:

Audi's entry-level sedan and wagon are all new for 2002. Along with a redesigned body structure and new sheet metal, the new A4 receives a variety of changes to make it sportier. It is motivated by either a 170-horsepower 1.8-liter turbocharged four or a completely new 3.0-liter 220-horsepower V6, which can be mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Making its debut this year for non-quattro models is a continuously variable transmission (CVT), also known as multitronic. An in-dash six-disc CD changer and a dual-zone auto climate control top the standard features list.

Pros:
  • Available all-wheel drive, powerful engines, sharp handling.
Cons:
  • Prices shoot up with options.

  • What A Superb Car! - 2002 Audi A4

I wanted a car that was safe, sporty, luxurious, well-engineered, fast and reliable-- but not an SUV. I ckd out & test drove Volvos, BMWs, Mercedes, VW Passats & the A-4s. Audis commitment to building safer, superb cars was impressive, as were the test drives. The 3.0 Quattro. Whoa! Just too hot. The 1.8 w/Quattro w/manual was absolute perfection. Power, safety, superb engineering, craftsmanship & attention to detail. (Detroit, are you listening?!!) I bought it.

This car is awesome and pleasing to look at. Hope it is as trouble free as I hear!

it has been in the shop twice for check engine light issues. It will be going in for a third time for cruise control problems. The car interior makes "wear and tear" noises that should not be evident in a brand new car. I have an 89 Benz that has less squeaks. Im guessing the sport suspension induced the squeaks, coupled with driving the car in San Franciscos terrible city streets. For a car that weighs as much as a Toyota 4Runner, I find the V6 lacking.

If you are worried about anything regardding this vehicle, dont be for its a gem. About 1000 miles to date, firm solid quiet ride, great suspension. Quiet on the inside too, except when the Bose is cranked. I was a littleconcerned with the 4 cylinder engine, but will report that the 5 speed gear box lets this go from zero to 60 comfortably. GREAT HANDLING CAR!!!!

The exterior styling alone is reason enough to buy an A4. I stepped up to the 16" 5-spoke wheels. Looks great! The sport suspension is simply too severe for Ohio roads. Once you get past 1st gear life is wonderful. I still havent figured out if starting off slow or spilling my coffee is best. This is the most fun-to-drive vehicle I have owned. BMW was too much $$$ and there are too many of them on the road.

  • Some crazed German Engineers dream car. - 2002 Audi A4

Want my Passat GLX back. Great looks. fun to drive. Lots of weird accoutrements in the cabin. Power is adequate. Seat motor was broken, took 3 weeks to repair the seat. Crowded Cockpit. Transmission very unique. Radio reception poor. Difficult for me to get comfortable the way the seat is configured. Not that it really matters but the cupholder is without a doubt the worst feature of the vehicle.

  • Sad "Audi Experience! - 2002 Audi A4

Unfortunately, our experience has not been a happy one. Audi is presently installing our third engine in our 2002 A4 after only 50,000 miles! Our car has spent nearly 3 months in the shop in the past 36 months. Weve bought a new Maxima and plan to sell our Audi as soon as possible.

I just ordered my 2003 A4 1.8T Quattro with the manual transmission. I said yes to just about all of the options, including: Bose stereo, sport package, premium package, xenons, etc. I previously owned a 99 A4 1.8T. The 20 more horsepower of the current model paired with the manual tranny makes for a much quicker car. You may want to consider getting the 17 in wheels with all season radials instead of the sport package. Still a little extra grip for performace but smoother, more competent ride in inclement weather. Highly reccomend to all.

  • Still love this car after 56000 miles - 2002 Audi A4

Strengths: Stong 3.0 liter is a joy to drive, Tiptronic adapts to your driving mood and style. The interior is beautiful and funtional. This design still looks as fresh as it did 3 years ago. Weaknesses: Bose Stereo is not up to the level of the rest of this car, the passenger seat is not comfortable (so say my wife & son). The interior has not worn all that well. Reliability has been OK, the coils failed the same week that I received the recall notice. The bolt holding a pulley onto the engine fell out , an oil seal failed which left me stranded. Conclusions: I think that the A-4 is a better built car than my wifes M-B 240 AWD. Im ordering a new A-6.
