Overview & Reviews
A redesigned S40 was introduced halfway through the 2004 model year as a 2004.5 model. It continues into 2005 unchanged.
- Sharper handling than you would expect from a Volvo, T5 version offers quick acceleration, well-designed interior controls, long list of safety features, available all-wheel drive.
- Firm suspension can be choppy on the highway, average performance from the non-turbo engine.

Volvo S40 T5 Revoew - 2005 Volvo S40
By Jim Loukides - December 8 - 2:36 pmSince purchasing this car, 2 months ago, it has been back to the dealership 6 for repairs on the radio. I purchased the upgraded stereo, which obviously was a mistake as it never works. When trying to change a station on the radio, after the car has been restarted, the sounds dies and the radio "locks-up". The only way to "un- lock" the radio is by shutting the car off and restarting. Volvo Corp. has been very unresponsive in my concerns about this issue. I will think twice before EVER purchasing another Volvo.

Volvo blew enginge turbo at 54 k - 2005 Volvo S40
By glenn - July 6 - 6:53 pmMy engine blew up when the turbo/intercooler literally blew up dumping all oil and coolant out without warning at 54k miles. I am sick. Volvo says tough luck.

Not so good - 2005 Volvo S40
By no good - June 26 - 8:06 amWas alright in the beginning. Then started having problems after a year or so. We have had multiple problems with the A/C and the heater. At least once a year we have had to deal with these issues. Just recently broke down 3 times in the past month. Definitely doesnt live up to all the hype of Volvos. Wouldnt recommend this car after the past month.

intro. to sport sedan - 2005 Volvo S40
By Daniel Dingo - April 22 - 9:36 pmThe 2005 volvo s40 is a great intro. level sports sedan. For under $25,000 the s40 gives you a great unique design and comfort. The 2.5L engine is under powered for this car, and the lack of power doesnt give you a good fuel economy in this case. I am getting about 18-20 mpg for city and highway. The s40 have one of the best features for safety, it drives like a Toyota camry but it have to look of a great sport coupe.

2005 S40 - 2005 Volvo S40
By Horsefeeder - March 23 - 9:36 pmThis is definitely a great/cheaper alternative to the A4, if performance is not your thing. The base 2.4 has little zip, but handles very well - except on the highway. The gas tank, though listed at 16 gallons, is actually only 12 due to a poor design which placed a hump in the gas tank to allow for the AWD option. Instead of a 350+/- range, its more like 260, which means more trips to the gas station (thank Ford for that!). Great trunk space, lots of leg-room in the back seat, fold-down back seat provides tons of cargo space for such a small car. If youre used to a 4-cylinder, get the base 2.4, but if youre used to a 6-cylinder, get the T5 or else youll be bored out of your mind!

Lemon Volvo - 2005 Volvo S40
By LF - March 23 - 4:06 amI loved my S40...for about 6 months. It has less than 7K miles on it. They couldnt find the leak that flooded the front passenger floor..found it...replaced the windshield..with a (nother) defective windshield. Now this is the 2nd time its in the shop with the Check Engine light illuminated. I traded in my 7 year old Honda Civic that didnt have ONE issue in the entire time I owned it (aside from routine maintenance). I wish I had it back.

love it but mines a lemon - 2005 Volvo S40
By mbjeanes - March 11 - 8:56 amAfter researching and test driving cars for 4 months, I fell in love with the S40. It drives like a dream, accelerates well,is fun to shift, has a moon roof and premium sound system. Couldnt be happier-- when its not in the shop. Ive owned the car less than 9 weeks and its been in the shop for 24 days. It has less than 18K mi. The climate control sensor blew hot air and was serviced 2x before replacement was backordered; the window regulators on both front windows were replaced; window rail on drivers side replaced; the passenger seat belt was replaced (air bag light came on). Im scheduled to pick it up tomorrow but after 3 wks in a loaner, Im not sure Ill remember how to drive it

I like it! - 2005 Volvo S40
By Dave - March 9 - 8:46 pmIve had my Volvo for over three years now and still really enjoy it. I have driven it on the German Autobahn, and can say it drives better at 100mph than at 60 mph. With the 5-speed it accelerates adequately, with just enough power to feel in control during traffic merging situations. It handles well enough, but feels best when you just cruise along relaxing. In fact it is so comfortable I dont mind getting stuck in a traffic jam; the upgraded sound system is awesome. Climate/radio controls are adjusted with the one finger, without looking. This car does very well when the roads start getting slippery.
