This Year's Model Updates:

The Sportwagen body style and diesel-fueled TDI engine debut for the 2009 VW Jetta. Unlike the previous-generation Jetta's TDI, this more powerful diesel engine is 50-state certified in terms of emissions. Other changes throughout the Jetta lineup include stability control, heated seats and heated washer nozzles added as standard equipment. The optional navigation system has also been substantially upgraded to include a touchscreen interface and a 30GB hard drive.

Pros:
  • Diverse selection of strong engines, upscale look and feel, comfortable seats, impressive cargo capacity in both body styles, pleasant ride.
Cons:
  • Below-average fuel economy with 2.5-liter engine, small backseat compared to midsize competitors.

  • 2 for 1 - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

I have been driving GM products for the past 15 years and I was dragging my feet when my wife took me to Betten Imports! My lease was up on my GM car and guess what? GM is out of that business. We drove the Jetta SE, and were delighted by all the standard features. We were especially delighted with the ESP and the way it handled in snow. Very important in Michigan. When we got to the lease payment, I quickly realized that for $50 more per month than I was paying for my GM car we could lease 2 Jettas. So we did! My wifes is a Salsa Red and mine is a Reflective Silver. We love the wonders of German engineering. The sound system is awesome! We love the mp3 connectivity. The heated seats rock!

  • Still in honeymoon phase - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

I have now had my tdi one year and 35,000 miles. Still drives like new. I do a lot of highway driving and it is too easy to drive way over the speed limit (85-90) while still getting 35-37 mpg. Queen size air mattress fits in back for the dog. No downshifts required when driving up 6% grade mountain highways. Torque just flattens out the mountain. Driven very conservatively, I have nearly hit 700 miles to a single tank of diesel.

  • A Lot of Car for the Money - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Great car. Traded in a Subaru Impreza which I liked but the VW is in a different league. More like a BMW or Audi. The car is almost perfect, just a few minor details such as the sunroof dial should be illuminated, everything else in the car is and at night you cant see where the dial is pointing.

  • Jetta TDI wagon - a confusing experience - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

The vehicle is great to drive. We live in a mountainous area and it eats hills. We can drive from Kamloops to Vancouver in 6th without much problem. It has loads of passing power. Even with hills and high speeds combined fuel use is 6.7 L/100km. That said, vehicle totally failed at 1000km and had to be towed to a VW dealer for repair. The problem was identified as a leaking turbo hose. This was fixed but the engine warning light subsequently came on frequently until the engine computer was "re- mapped". Carpet in rear is coming out from the interior sill and the carpet on the back of the rear seats is falling off. This is all scheduled for repair but is a bit disappointing.

  • Fuel Filler Issue - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I like my TDI very much but there is an issue with finding a small automotive diesel fuel fill nozzle in rural areas. The big nozzles used at truck stops and most small town gas stations that sell diesel will not fit in the TDI fuel filler opening. When in dire need I have held the big nozzle against (not in) the opening and slowly added fuel. This is hard to do because the truck flow rate is also much higher than the VW can accept - so an overflow onto your shoes is very likely. Because of several bad experiences I always start looking for an automobile diesel pump way in advance of running out. McGyver-types will figure out how to survive but this is something that needs consideration

  • Great Car, Great Value - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Pondered over buying this car for months. I am glad I pulled the trigger. Lots of power, sweet 6 speed. Build quality is great, better than the BMW, Audi,or Infiniti I have had in the past. Good sound system (not great). I think this is the best 21K car sold in the past 10 years. Test drove the DSG and that was pretty awesome but I had to go manual.

  • Fuel Pump Failure - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!! At 30,000 miles the fuel pump failed and VW is trying to pin it on me, even though this is a common problem. They asked me to show them my last 5 fuel reciepts. I dont save fuel reciepts, not many people do. The seats are not comfortable, my back hurts after riding in this car for a half hour. If they solve the fuel pump issue Ill either replace the driver seat, or have it redone by an upholstery shop.

  • Great car for the price! - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Great car, very reliable. Great on gas, and affordable. I only wish it drove better in the snow. Definitely need to upgrade to snow tires on this one.

  • Great Commuter Car - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought this car mainly for commuting duty (90% highway driving) as I drive 65 miles daily round-trip. The DSG transmission is extremely smooth and a good investment. The ride is smooth and comfortable at highway speeds. The combined package of high mpg, comfortable ride, good handling, safety features, cargo room, resale value, and $1300 tax credit made it a no-brainer for me. The only problem was finding one. I found the exact car I wanted, but it had the DVD/Nav. I decided to buy anyway to avoid the 3- 4 month wait of a factory order. Ive only been driving the car a few days, but I really like it dont regret the purchase. Feels more Audi-like than my 2006 BMW 330i.

  • Great Car - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

This is a great car. My car is at 38k miles and the only problem Ive had is weak break pads, but that can happen to any car. It is extremely smooth to drive. It has delayed steering, a great suspension, smooth shifting, and a VERY quiet engine. Im pretty young, and I drive manual transmission so I think that the quiet engine is a negative quality of the car, but that is a great thing for a lot of people. And the inside is amazing, I havent had a person sit in my car and not give me a compliment. With heated seats (not leather), electric Everything, and plenty, i mean PLENTY of room in both the front and back seats, it feels like a $30k+ luxury vehicle. (only paid $14k)
