This Year's Model Updates:

The Sportwagen body style and diesel-fueled TDI engine debut for the 2009 VW Jetta. Unlike the previous-generation Jetta's TDI, this more powerful diesel engine is 50-state certified in terms of emissions. Other changes throughout the Jetta lineup include stability control, heated seats and heated washer nozzles added as standard equipment. The optional navigation system has also been substantially upgraded to include a touchscreen interface and a 30GB hard drive.

Pros:
  • Diverse selection of strong engines, upscale look and feel, comfortable seats, impressive cargo capacity in both body styles, pleasant ride.
Cons:
  • Below-average fuel economy with 2.5-liter engine, small backseat compared to midsize competitors.

  • Beware! - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This review is for the 2009, but based on my research affects all TDI models. All TDIs have a High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) and they are prone to failure when the diesel fuel gets contaminated. My Diesel somehow got water in the diesel and apparently based on the rust in the tank this had been an on going problem. At 107000 miles the fuel system had to be replaced to the tune of $5,800 dollars. Apparently diesel fuel standards in the US are lower than that of Europe and VW hasnt taken that into consideration. Please CONSIDER this when purchasing.

I found all the initial reports to be very favorable. My wife hates to drive the Jetta due to a stall when she trys to merge into traffic. I now believe that the car is a death trap.

  • not like the 2002 - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

We test drove a 2009 Jetta TDI wagon to compare it to our 2002 TDI wagon. Our 2002 gets mileage almost 10 mpg higher than the 2009. Fit and finish are about the same. With diesel now lower priced than gas here in our state, and teh difference in mileage, we will keep running our 2002 for a long time to come. After VW screwed up and lowered the mileage, find yourself a 2002 or 2003 TDI diesel if you can and buy that instead. They command a huge price premium in our area being they are so much better than the 2009 models.

  • Good car, but bad reliability, warranty - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I have had this car for one year, and put 40,000 miles on it. The radio stopped working several weeks ago and a radio should not stop working after only 12 months. My warranty was up at this time because I am at 40,000 mi. And was told that it would cost me $980 not including tax and labor! I called the 1-800 number and was transferred to a "customer advocate" to hear my problem. I explained to them that if it was a moving part in the vehicle I would understand but this was outrageous to pay for something like the radio which should last longer than one year. I love german cars, however I am never going back to a volkswagen. No wonder they have 200 complaints out of every 1000 cars sold.

  • Worst car ever driven..... - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I fell in love with this car from the moment I laid eyes on it, how ever the moment my warranty expired my nightmares began. Luckily, some of the problems started when I still had warranty. Since I bought me car, I had to replace the septic system, I had electric system problem where my sunroof didnt open and my radio did not turn on. Now Im having intermittent problems with my gas cap not opening. I looked to see if there is a manual release, but unable to locate. Im driven a Mazda, Toyota, and a Honda, I have never seen so many problems on a car under 35,000 miles.

  • Pretty shoddy. Lots of problems. Dealers dont care. - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

So, Ive had my wagon for about 32 months and Ive given up. Ive had multiple problems with the suspension, the alloy wheels break from even the most minor potholes. Ive replaced something like 7 wheels at this point and finally started buying steel wheels. Those havent had any problems. The dealers are hideously overpriced and dont seem to care about any of the problems Ive had. They just want me to keep coming back and spending more money when something breaks. After another $600 bill for a small pothole Ive given in. Im waiting for Kia to get their 2012 models in and as soon as they do the Jettas gone. I got 120k miles out of my last car (Honda), but only 45k out of this junk heap

Water in tank in aug. "flushed" at dealer. Air compressor bad/replaced in sept/20,000 check. Car died on road. Towed. Fuel system needs replacing due to aug problem:$6500 in parts excludes labor. Progressive only replaced parts 1 at a time. "ok" per dealer. No power 1st day used. Turbo now bad/replaced under warranty. Diagnostics done at dealer couldnt be interpreted. Had to call corporate! Fuel sys warranty void now. Dealer wants to replace fuel sys even new parts. Ins. Co. Says no totals car. We are out $2500. Paid cash for new car for 1st time. Car not used from sept 22 to nov 10 (minus 1 day on road) when we received check from progressive. Worst car experience ever. First and last VW.

  • great vehicle until 80,000 miles - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

dealership support has always been an issue. I dont trust them to tell me the truth. After an dealership oil change I left on a long trip. 500 miles from home in the middle of nowhere, loud flapping noises from the engine compartment. I inspected and discovered that the underbelly pan was missing bolts. I limped along at 60 miles an hour for another 500 miles to a town that had a VW dealership. I had to pay to have the missing bolts replaced. Local home dealership denied to refund me the cost of the repair. It appears that its a myth...Diesel engines are good for 100,000 s of miles. At 100,000 miles, the repair saga has begun. Do I dump and run or do I take my chances that the worst is behind me?

  • Reliability Diaster - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

The car is ideal in concept and I enjoyed it very much in the beginning - especially the 6 speed and low end torque. But the initial quality was poor. Problems included the navigation system, ABS, and exhaust system. Then the fuel pump failed at 27k miles. Very, very disappointed. I have 2 Toyotas with 255k miles combined and Ive never thought about the fuel system failing => Much less to the tune of $10k. VW is covering under warranty, but I would consider the quality very much below average.

  • Suspension Noise Driving me crazy - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Bought new 2009 Jetta SE in Jan 09. Once weather got warmer, noises started (creaking, squeaking) when any pressure applied to the suspension, on turns, bumps, breaking. Five dealer service calls and problem still exists. They have replaced front lower control arm bushings, twice, sway bar assembly, front lower control arms, and problem remains. Poor service from Volkswagen Customer Care and the dealer. The car has been in service for 22 days, each time they acknowledge the problem, but do not seem to take it very seriously, send it back with problem not resolved. I am very disappointed, as I think I am stuck with a lemon. Will never buy from Volkswagen again. Jetta QC must be poor.
