This Year's Model Updates:

The Sportwagen body style and diesel-fueled TDI engine debut for the 2009 VW Jetta. Unlike the previous-generation Jetta's TDI, this more powerful diesel engine is 50-state certified in terms of emissions. Other changes throughout the Jetta lineup include stability control, heated seats and heated washer nozzles added as standard equipment. The optional navigation system has also been substantially upgraded to include a touchscreen interface and a 30GB hard drive.

Pros:
  • Diverse selection of strong engines, upscale look and feel, comfortable seats, impressive cargo capacity in both body styles, pleasant ride.
Cons:
  • Below-average fuel economy with 2.5-liter engine, small backseat compared to midsize competitors.

  • A very good car and it requires maintenance - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I have 100K miles on the car & have been very happy. I had an electrical issue. It was resolved. Maintenance costs can be cut in half by purchasing the parts yourself & then have a reputable non dealer garage install them. My chosen garage specializes in German vehicles and were rated very highly. I use Lucas and Stanadyne Diesel fuel treatements for injector cleaning & additional injector/fuel pump lubrication. I am gearing up to change my timing belt. I am going to pay $700 instead of the $1200 mentioned on another review here. I researched and purchased the parts online and provided them to my mechanic. I expect to see many miles more.... God willing and the creek dont rise

  • Not your typical diesel - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Coming from a Legacy GT I was worried that the power wouldnt be there. However mated with the 6 speed manual it is plenty of zip and performs just fine in the mountains near Denver. The 1 regret is the gearing on the vehicle for higher speed driving. For customers that need to avg. 80 mph you wont get the typical 42 mpg I have been calculating. The best mpg - avg speed hovers around 60 - 63 mph which correlates to 50 mpg. Overall I am happy so far, 6,600 miles in the fuel costs are excellent and always try to get 600 miles to the tank. Pricing makes it hard to say no and the gov. incentives are nice. The only problem I foresee is taking it in for service, Ive heard horror stories.

  • TDI lives up to billing - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

We have owned our YDI Jetta for 2 months and have nothing but great things to say about it. The mileage has been 42 MPG average with about 60/40 highway/city driving. Neither my wife or I really try too hard with the mileage so I feel that those are good numbers. The car itself is very comfortable and has many creature comforts not seen in other "Fuel Misers". We went through Costco Auto Buying Program which was very stress free and we got dealer invoice which with the $1300 tax credit is less then a similarly equipped Prius and no batteries to worry about down the road. We are x3 VW owners and have had good lluck with the reliability so well see in a few years and 100000 mi.

  • Reliable & Fun to drive sedan. - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

I never had any issue with my Jetta in these 2years. It has been fun to drive. Mileage is not bad. Its a very good small family sedan with HUGE trunk space. I easily fit 3 big luggages into it.

  • update........ - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Have now had the car for approximately 10 months, just under 15K kilometres. So far, no problems, though it did need the DSG transmission flash. Warranty on trans. extended by VW as well. I look forward to driving it daily. Has plenty of grunt and hugs the corners like its on a rail. It just feels pleasant to drive, very ergonomic and everything makes sense how its situated. Good cargo capacity and has stood up to two young kids well. The diesel engine is a pleasure and the mileage, as far as I can gauge, is great. Its parked outside during the day and has never failed to start in a Calgary winter. Would gladly purchase again.

  • Great Wagen for an amazing price - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Love this Wagon, and have found new features while using it on a road trip. One BIG problem is that the seats hug your back and dont let your lower back rest normally onto the seat. It almost squeezes your upper back and doesnt allow for proper breathing. Besides that, very happy with the my VW and would recommend it to anyone.

  • 2009 VW TDI DSG Tranny Update - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Seriously folks, you must have to get this Dealer Warranty replaced. Our 2.0L TDI has a Mechtronic Controller Unit that sits atop the DSG Tranny. This Unit controls and puts a stop to the jerky and hesitation. Palisades VW in New York replaced mine last summer and WOW it has made a significant difference in the fuel economy, quickness, and safety. Now, when I press the pedal lightly, the TDI shifts smooooth and quick. Also, when slowing down, no more jerks. At 58 MPH I get 52 MPG with the AC blowing cold. In the city, at 45 MPH I get 60 + MPG. Seriously, do not let the dealers tell you otherwise. We spent extra money for the TDI for a reason. Make the call and beat the BMW driving uphill.

  • A Must Buy Car - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Been driving my Jetta since the last 10 days. What a car! Extremely powerful, yet economical engine. You wont hear the road noise, which is a big deal. Very logical controls and comfortable sitting position. Looks solidly built. Hugs the road like a train on rails.

  • Small Wonder - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Ours. Well, wifes but what the heck I get to drive it too when we ride together. we got the 6 speed manual, what a blast to drive. by the way we went in to buy a Tiguan but ended up buying the TDI we think its a better value. Got the multiple on dash cd changer but dont need it cause its got an ipod hook up and the rest is history. this car is well worth it, an excellent car without comparison, buy one we need to support the Diesel technology so they bring more choices for us to love.

  • An Item to consider - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I like my TDI very well however potential buyers need to be aware of one drawback - availability of diesel fuel. Only about one (non-truck stop) station in five has a diesel pump, and it is often off to the side and not under a canopy so larger vehicles can access it. The fuel filler nozzle is frequently too large for the TDIs small opening (Why VW?) requiring holding the nozzle and slowly filling enough to get to a better pump. Could not recommended this car unless you are willing to endure this inconvenience
