This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, all Jetta models get an updated look, optional telematics and a new and more powerful 1.9-liter TDI engine (GL and GLS models only). The 2.0-liter engine is now PZEV-rated, and the GLX trim is no longer available. Also note that you can no longer get the 1.8T engine in GL trim. Besides that, the GLI sedan sports new 17-inch alloy wheels and the Cold Weather Package items (heated seats and washer nozzles) as standard, while the GLS features a standard Monsoon stereo. The wagons get a revised instrument cluster late in the model year, and the sedans get new metallic trim rings around the gauges.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI power plant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard safety features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom, weak base four-cylinder.

  • Great Car/Great Value - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Before I purchased the Jetta I looked at everything from Cheverolets to Jaguars to Mercedes to Nissans and spent two months looking everyday. I was replacing a Lexus IS300 that was wrecked. My main concern was safety and VW ranks at the top on saftey. The Jetta gets great gas mileage, is a quality build that had many of the same interior designs as the Mercedes (without the high repair cost), and has a great reputation. My cousin had one of these he drove for many years and finally sold with 310,000 miles on it and it was still running. Overall the car is one of the best on the road that offers quality, style, performance, and reliability all in one.

  • Love it - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

The VW Jetta is a great car that is built better than any other car on the road. Most German cars like BMW and Mercedes are good quality but, high maintanance cost. The Japenese cars are reliable, but have cheap features and interiors. The American cars have a long way to go with quality in both the interior and exterior...also with reliablity. So the Jetta is the one car that you can get German quality, virtually no maintanance, very safe, and extremely reliable all one.

This is my second Jetta. Purchased the first on in 2000 and the product and service I have received has always been top notch with Volkswagen. Minor problems were alway repaired quickly and to my satisfaction. My next purchase will be a Volkswagen.

I have had two Fords and a Nissan before I bought my Jetta Wolfsburg. They dont even come close. This is one of the best cars ever built. Build quality, performance, you name it, its got it all.

  • 2004 PD TDI WAGON - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

This is my second VW TDI. Other cars include a Mercedes and Corvette. The new 2004 PD TDI has noticably more torque and more power, however, fuel mileage is not quite as good as the 2000-2003 TDIs. I got 45 -50 mpg on last TDI; 2004 PD TDI gets about 40-45 mpg... still very good. I would avoid the light beige cloth interior... too hard to keep clean. (I known this from my 2000 TDI). Overall, very happy with car and would highly recommend.

  • Jetta is Great! 70K miles and counting! - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

The Jetta seems to be a love/hate car. It looks to me like a lot of people that had the 1.8T models had serious issues. Couldnt be happier with the 2.0 L GLS model. Only complaint is the water pump issue that VW has yet to recall. Common issue: the water pump fins melt off and cause head gasket failure. If you look around, this happens to everyone. Other than that, very few issues in 5 years. Great car for the money and fun to drive!

  • 2004 GLS 1.8T is a fun car - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Overall the 2004 Jetta is a great car. So much fun to drive, fast and responsive. Sun roof is great, 8 speakers in the Monsoon sound system make music sound good.

  • Gotta get a GLI - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Just came off-lease on a 2001 Jetta GLS VR6 and I had to have another. Thought about buying my 01 until I got behind the wheel of the 04 GLI VR6. This car is a beast...love the beefed up 24v engine, 6-spd manual and 17-inch alloys. Like my 01 Jetta, the fit, finish, quality of my 04 GLI are exceptional. VW continues to impress with affordable performance!!

  • As Good As It Gets - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

For starters, the dealership was clean, modern and full of beautiful cars to choose from. The Jetta was more in my price range, so I decided to go for it. My budget was keeping me in the upper end of the compact car range, so I stretched a little and went for the GLS 1.8T model, sport package with cold weather options.

  • Gets the job done - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This is my 10th VW. I bought it as a Certified used car from a dealer rather than a 2006 model since I wanted a factory tape deck. This is my third diesel and is, by far, the best. I spend quite a lot of time in the car and it is does everything well. The Monsoon sound system is great except for poor AM reception that the dealer has been unable to correct. Although I drive the car briskly and primarily non-city, the fuel consumption has been 48 - 49 MPG over the last 7,000 miles. The cruise control, despite less than optimal placement, is dead-on accurate. The car handles well, has excellent brakes and the ESP system works flawlessly. The trunk capacity is good, but the rear seat room is below average.
