This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

  • Underwhelmed - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Have owned this car for 14 months now and still not pleased with it. Turbo is overly touchy, handling is poor, lacks extra power at highway speeds and transmission is not overly smooth. Have had minor problems - drivers side window fell off track, mirror adjustment knob broke-off and seal around headlight took on moisture (all 3 items were covered under waranty). Monsoon Sound System is not spectacular (but probably better than a No his, no lows must be Bose system). The car can take a good hit though. Recently was T-boned on the passenger side (11k worth of damage) and the car protected me well.

Ive had brake problems for 3 years which Brakeway finally diagnosed and fixed. Then my tranny went out and it took over a month and $5k to fix. Now I got spots on my hood, roof, and trunk which was determined to be manuf. defect, but they wont deal with it because my warranty is out. The console is flimsy trash and my d. side door handle assembly came apart when I tried to close the door in the winter, but the latch assembly froze, on a German car! This is the first car I cannot work on myself. My fuel economy is around 30mph, though others are getting 40. I can truly say the dealer sold me a lemon that I still have to pay for. But, Im not paying to paint

  • CHECK IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY JETTA. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT I HAVE NOT EVEN HAD IT FOR A YEAR AND IT HAS BEEN TO THE REPAIR SHOP SEVERAL TIMES. IT TENDS TO BURN OIL VERY FAST AND LEAVE A BURNING SMELL. I HAVE SPENT ALOT OF TIME GETTING THIS VEHICLE REPAIRED AND LESS TIME ENJOYING IT. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING INTO THE PROBLEMS AND COMPLAINTS FROM OTHERS WHICH ARE ALL SIMILIAR TO MY OWN. I DO RECOMMEND TO TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT WHAT YOUR GETTING YOURSELF INTO AND (HINT) WHERE EXACTLY THIS CAR IS REALLY COMING FROM! REMEMBER LOOKS ARE NOT EVERYTHING, YOUR SAFETY IS!

  • Never Again! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Two years ago when I bought my Jetta, I loved it... a few months later I realized what a mistake I made getting rid of my old car. Ive had it in for problems, which seem to keep recurring. Twice in less than a year the engine indicator light and the temperature light have come on due to problems, a headlight, two brake lights, and a blinker light all have been out, a new tire and not to mention the window that wouldnt go up. Its one thing after another.

  • bling, but your bnk acct it will clean! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

This car was fun to drive until the relationship degenerated to the point I cringed ever time I had to start it, fearing something else would break. If I werent able to complete most repairs myself, Id probably have spent 5-8k in repairs. All the usual problems—bad ignition coils, 3 radios, window regulators, broken keyfob, multiple wheel bearings (as in 7 or 8 of them), various failed switches, broken glovebox door, broken center console latch (x5) & antenna. In addition, I had 3 airbag system component failures (which I couldn’t fix myself and cost $$$) and a wheel vibration issue that nobody could resolve. I gave up at 79k because I knew the plastic waterpump impeller was on borrowed time

  • Cute Car for everyday driver.. - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive owned my jetta gls for almost 2yrs. Never had any major problems. However i bought the cloth interior and it is HORRIBLE. Every piece of lint sticks to it and its really difficult to clean. Spend the $ for leather. Its not a very quick car, if you want something fun, this is not the car for you, something pratical, then yes. Im thinking of buying something with a little more power. 115 horsepower is pretty minimal. Cute car for a first time driver.

  • What is the matter with Volkswagen - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

We purchased our 2002 Jetta due our past experience with owning several prior to this. The car has given good gas mileage, but has recently started to burn oil. We have had to have front windows repaired and the passagers seat repaired. Volkswagen feels that burning a quart of oil per 1,000 miles is acceptable. We are going to get rid of this car as soon as possible, before anything else goes wrong. Transmition started to jump on cold mornings. Dealer says transmition is compensating. What ever!! Alot of rattles. Too bad, we really wanted to like this car.

  • This car is NO GOOD - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This is my first - and last - Volkswagen. My 2002 Jetta had constant issues after 15,000 miles. So far the power windows have stuck down, I have had the radio replaced twice, the brake switch out (that was fun - driving with no brake lights for who knows how long), it has had constant battery issues since I bought the car (I have replaced it three times already and still have to keep a jump starter in my car for the inevitable 2-3 times per month that I need it), the seat heater shorted out - be careful - it will burn you, the center console is broken, and the passenger seat has coughed up two springs so far (my dealer says its no big deal). The inside looks nice - but Im constantly having little plastic pieces breaking off - and Im pretty careful with my car. Avoid this car.

  • I Thought It Was Only My Luck - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I thought it was only my luck when my Jetta broke down within the first few months I purchased it. After all, I did buy it on September 11, 2001. After countless visits to the dealership (for non-routine services), years of frustration and headaches, a few near-death experiences, and tens of thousands in cash, I will finally pay off my Jetta this September. But whats the point now? Ive put so much money and energy into a car that is barely drivable. This is my first and last VW ever! I am just so damn tired having to deal with all the crap this car brings.

  • Stay away from 1.8T - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This is the WORST VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED!!! Since 900 miles, I have had extremely rough idle on cold startup. Finally, one year 4 service appointments later (including a visit to VW of NA headquarters in MI), they replaced the engine control module and seem to have solved the problem. Additionally, a $24K vehicle should not squeek and rattle as terribly as this, even on Michigans pothole-infested roads! DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE LEMONS!!!
